Chapter 68
“Could it be?” Katrina dragged out her tone, clearly hinting, before continuing, “There’s some shortcut, right?”
Melissa tossed the paper towel into the trash can and looked into Katrina’s eyes directly, her smile fading. “Are you questioning the company’s selection process?” she shot back.
Katrina chuckled lightly. “I just heard you have connections in the company. I’m just asking casually, and don’t be so serious.”
A wave of disgust rose in Melissa’s chest. She felt no desire to keep the conversation going with Katrina. But since it was her first day, she didn’t want
to sour relationships with her coworkers right away. She replied directly, I followed the procedures to participate.”
Katrina let out a slow, exaggerated “Oh, and added, “Well, you must be really impressive. With a genius like you in our department, we can all sit back and relax now!
The excitement and joy Melissa had felt about starting at the Parvati had vanished entirely because of Katrina’s presence.
Don’t waste energy on unnecessary relationships, Melissa reminded herself. And definitely don’t let Katrina ruin my mood or focus at worl
Returning to her desk. Melissa resumed her tasks with full attention.
Melissa, it’s time for lunch, Scott said, his warm voice breaking her concentration, bringing a familiar sense of comfort. “You’re just as diligent as you were back in school
“Wow, it’s already noon!” Melissa replied with a sheepish smile as she stood up. “I’ve been so focused. There’s so much to learn as a newbie.”
Scott, who worked in Design Department Two, was a senior employee and well–acquainted with everyone in Department One. He greeted the group cheerfully and joked, “Melissa is a college buddy of mine, so til have to trouble you all to take good care of her.”
Hearing this, Niki exclaimed, “No way: Melissa is one of your friends? Everyone from your class is incredible!”
Before Scott could reply, Katrina’s sarcastic tone cut through the room. “I knew it. If someone rejected at the interview stage still manages to win the competition, there’s got to be a master pulling strings behind the scenes. Now it all makes sense.”

On their way to the cafeteria. Melisa looked unbothered, but Scott still seemned annoyed. However, be comforted her. “Don’t take Katrina too seriously. She’s known for her sharp tongue and competitive nature. She’s just scared you’ll outshine her someday.”
Melissa smiled faintly. “Don’t worry about me. I’m here to work, not to get caught up in trivial things.”
Seeing that her indifference wasn’t feigned. Scott dropped the topic.
Soon, they entered the cafeteria and found a table by the window. As they sat down, Scout began explaining the company’s perks.
In addition to free meals, the Parvati offered a gym, a swimming pool, a media room, a coffee lounge, and other impressive benefits:
Having been away from this kind of professional environment for three years, Melissa found herself excited by every detail. Her mood brightened significantly.
Meanwhile, Bradley passed by the cafeteria, his sharp eyes catching sight of Melissa and Scott laughing together. His brows furrowed deeply.
Doesn’t she tell me men are all the same? And now she’s smiling so happily? What, Scott doesn’t count as a man? Bradley muttered.
Without breaking his stride, Bradley continued toward the main building his expression darker than ever.
Nearby, Katrina carried a takeout box back to her office. When she saw Bradley, her eyes lit up like fireworks. She checked her reflection on her phone quickly and hurried after him.
“H. Mr. Moore Katrina said, her voice sweet.
