After a busy flurry of activity, the police car arrived, and I, along with the robbers and Howard, were all taken away.
Lily, on the other hand, was panicking, fighting with all her might.
“Officer, this has nothing to do with me! I’m the victim here!”
“This is my wedding day–you can’t take me away!”
“Wendy is doing this on purpose! She chose today to ruin my wedding!”
“You can’t help her with this!”
She started to speak without thinking,

“Watch your words.”
“What do you mean by ‘helping her‘? We’re just enforcing the law!”
Lily, reprimanded, muttered an apology but didn’t stop.
“Officer, I really am innocent. Please let me go.”
“We don’t frame innocent people.”
“Please, don’t listen to Wendy–she’s full of tricks and lies.”
“We only act based on the evidence.”
The back–and–forth continued, the same argument repeating itself.

I couldn’t help but glance at the officer answering Lily, marveling at his patience.
But my attention quickly shifted to Howard, who had been staring blankly at the wedding ring the whole time.
When he saw me looking, his red eyes met mine, and he muttered, “Wendy, I bought this for you!”
I didn’t say anything, and he lowered his head again, talking as if no one else was there.
“I used to love you so much.”
“Why has everything changed?”
His voice cracked as he spoke, and I saw a tear fall onto the ring.

All the memories of the good times we shared flooded back to me.
And then I remembered that moment on the plane when Howard chose Lily.
A bitter smile crossed my face as I sighed inwardly. How quickly people change.
After saying that, Howard broke down, his tears flowed freely.
“Wendy, I really don’t know how things turned out this way.“”
“All I wanted at first was to make enough money to buy you a birthday gift.”
“But when I saw how happy you were with it, I just wanted to buy you more–better, more expensive ones.”

“I thought that would make you happier.”
“But I never realized I then wanted to make you feel like you owed me–make you grateful, make you accept my value.”
His confessed like there’s no one else in the car, while I couldn’t tell these words were truth or lies.
People exchanged glances, but no one dared to respond.
In the end, they turned their pleading eyes to me for help.
I awkwardly cleared my throat and closed my eyes, pretending to be asleep.
Howard kept talking until we arrived at the station. Only then did he wipe away his tears

and apologize to everyone, as if he weren’t heading to jail but going on a vacation instead.
I couldn’t stand it and scoffed, turning to walk away.
Soon after, the officers who had been
searching for evidence returned.
Howard, putting on a show, rushed to greet them.
“Thank you all for your hard work.”
“Everything Wendy said is just her personal opinion out of our quarrels.”
“None of this actually happened.”
He said it with such certainty.

I suspected that Howard had already dealt with the evidence.
Just as I was getting frustrated, the officer opposite me pulled out a phone.
“Howard, do you recognize this?”
I clearly saw Howard’s body stiffen, his disbelief palpable.
After a long pause, he awkwardly forced a smile.
“No… I don’t recognize it…”
He said this, but his gaze was fixed squarely on Lily.
When he saw her eyes dart away, Howard gritted his teeth, once again pinning his hopes on me.

“Wendy, we’ve been married for so many y years. There’s no need to involve the policee over such a small matter, right?”
“Our issues are just domestic disputes. really!”
“Making a big deal out of this will not only make us the laughing stock, but it will also affect the stock market…”
Howard continued to lecture me.
It was like a thousand flies buzzing in my
ear.
I couldn’t tolerate it anymore, and slapped his face again.
