Chapter 144
My heart skipped a beat as I suddenly remembered–back when Dester and 1 were still together, we both listed each other as emergency contacts at the hospital
After the divorce, neither of us had thought to update that information. So, of course, the hospital’s call went to me.
After a brief pause, I replied. “We’re divorced now. You should try contacting someone else
The person on the other end quickly responded. His mother seems to have been arrested, and we can’t reach anyone else. You’re the only one we can get ahold of. His condition is critical. He might not make it. If you can come, please do?
The line went dead before I could respond, leaving me stunned. I ran a hand through my disheveled hair, trying to calm myself and shake off the alcohol–induced fog in my mind
I thought. Who can I call for a ride? Is this some kind of joke!
I scrolled through my contacts, hesitated for a moment, and then called Holly
Holly laughed when she picked up. “Wait, seriously? After everything that’s happened, you’re still thinking about playing the saint and going to see
“I’m not trying to play the saint,” I said. “I just don’t want to get caught up in unnecessary trouble. Whether he lives or dies doesn’t really matter to me. But the hospital called so.” I trailed off, still trying to sober up.
Tine, fine. I’ll go with you, I haven’t had a drink, and my parents are watching my daughter, so I’m free. Let’s go
Holly was always straightforward, and without a second thought, she agreed. She picked me up, and together we headed to the hospital
The emergency room was a frenzy when we arrived. I spotted Dexter, bloodied and unconscious, lying on a bed surrounded by doctors and nurses The sight jolted me awake, pulling me out of my drunken haze
After asking a few questions, 1 learned that someone had already signed the consent forms, so they hadn’t delayed treatment.
The
e emergency room door was crowded with people, and the nurses quickly shut it, blocking the view,
Just then, I noticed a woman sitting in the corner on the other side of the room–it was Rhea. She was holding a young boy, Alton.
Both of them were covered in blood, though there were no visible injuries on them. It seemed the blood was from Dexter.
Rhea looked completely dazed, her eyes wide in shock. The boy in her arms, Alton, was silent, his face pale with fear, too scared to even meet anyone’s gaze. I wondered. What has happened?
My mind started racing, and I instinctively glanced over at the doctors work station. Sure enough, I saw Sheila there, looking frantic, talking to the doctors.
Then, I watched as she signed something on a piece of paper, her eyes red from crying, looking completely lost.
Suddenly, everything clicked into place
Holly, who had noticed Sheila as well, whispered in my car, “Hey, isn’t that Sheilar”
I nodded.
Sheila hadn’t noticed us. After signing the paper, she hurried over to Rhea, and the two sisters immediately exploded into a heated argument. Then, something shocking happened. Rhea, with surprising strength, jumped to her feet and, before anyone could react, scratched at Sheila’s face,
In the blink of an eye, her once–perfect, pale skin was slashed with deep, blous–red marks, making her look grotesque.
“Ah Shrila screamed, chatching her face, stumbling backward.
Hur Rhea wasn’t done. She grabbed Sheila by the hair and slammed her back onto the bench, shouting, “You slut! You slept with your brother–in–law
“Are you even human? If I hadn’t caught you today, how long did you think you could hide this from me?”
Sheila cried out and screamed. “Let go of me! Let g
