Phoebe frowned and looked at Mason. “Mason, thank you for helping ine, but I really do not want you to get involved in this. It is my personal matter.”
Mason saw the displeasure in Phoebe’s eyes, and it felt like a needle had pricked his heart. His face turned pale.
She said nothing more, turned around, and stepped into the elevator. Declan followed her inside.
Outside the elevator, Mason lowered his head, making it impossible for Phoebe to see his expression. But she knew her words must have hurt him.
As soon as the elevator doors closed, Declan sneered. “Just now, were you afraid I would actually do something to him? Is that why you were so eager to cut ties with him? You really do care about him”
Phoebe looked at him expressionlessly. “This has nothing to do with
you”
“Dare you say that again?” Declan warned.
Because of their ongoing conflict, Declan had been growing increasingly impatient. If Phoebe kept treating him so coldly, he was not sure what he might do.
Phoebe gazed at him indifferently, a hint of helplessness in her eyes. “What exactly do you want?”
Declan’s expression was icy as he stared at her. “If you come back to me, I will pretend none of this ever happened.”
Phoebe lowered her eyes. After a moment, she spoke. “I cannot do that. Other than divorce, there is no other way.”
“Phoebe, I have already explained to you. There is nothing between Jennie and me anymore. So why do you keep holding onto this?” Declan asked.
Phoebe took a deep breath and shook her head. “I am not holding onto anything. I just want a divorce, and that is all.”
“Impossible,” Declan said.
“If it is impossible, then we should each do as we please and not interfere in each other’s lives,” Phoebe said.
Her clear eyes reflected Declan’s figure, but the love that once filled them was gone. Only emptiness remained. “Do as we please?” Declan gritted out, his cold aura seeming to freeze everything around him.
Phoebe nodded. “Yes. If you can accept that, I will not bring up divorce again.”
The elevator fell into suffocating silence. Declan stared at her coldly, his eyes deep and unreadable.
When the elevator doors opened, Declan grabbed her and dragged her back to the room, throwing her onto the bed. Phoebe frowned and was about to get up when Declan pressed down on her, trapping her between himself and the bed. Declan frowned. “Phoebe, I have already told you. There is nothing between Jennie and me.”
“Fine. If you say there is nothing, so be it,” Phoebe said.
Seeing Phoebe’s indifferent expression, Declan felt an unprecedented sense of frustration and irritation. No matter how much he explained, she simply did not care.
