Just as the butler was about to agree, Leroy paused and said quickly, “Actually… forget it. Let her rest. Too much has happened lately.”
He sighed and hung up.
The next morning, Jane woke up in Leroy’s arms, a blissful smile on her face as if she’d just stepped out of a beautiful dream.
Gazing into his gentle eyes, she spoke softly, “I love you, Roy. I’ve made up my mind–I want to be with you. For real.”
Leroy said nothing.
Jane smiled sweetly, taking his silence as a yes. She reached for his neck, leaning in for a kiss–but in an instant, his expression turned cold, his voice slicing through like a blade.
“Who told you I ever wanted to be with you?”
She froze, completely still, her eyes welling up with tears.
“Roy, we’re already married. You said you didn’t hate me. Isn’t it only natural that we’d end up together?”
Leroy let out a low, bitter laugh and pushed her off him.
“Jane, just because I don’t hate you doesn’t mean you can take Jolie’s place. You think you can be Mrs. Yost? That’s a damn fantasy.
“I’m glad you made it back alive. I’m doing my best to make it up to you, to help you heal. But Jolie isn’t you.

“She’ll always be the only Mrs. Yost in my heart.”
Jane stared at him, stunned, speechless.
After a long silence, she bit her lip and yanked down her clothes, exposing her chest.

“I don’t believe you. Roy, you’ve treated me so well–you still have to love me. Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten everything we shared.
“Look at me. I’m just as good as Jolie!!
Steeling herself, she climbed into his lap–one hand unzipping his pants, the other unbuttoning his shirt.
Suddenly, she laughed, her face glowing with smug satisfaction.
“I knew it. You do love me. Look–my name’s tattooed on your collarbone.”
A deep red “J” was inked just above his chest. Wasn’t that “J” from Jane?
Leroy’s long fingers grazed the tattoo lightly, and for a fleeting moment, warmth flickered in his eyes.
Jane caught that look and moved in, her hands roaming freely across his body. She pressed her cheek against his chest, right over the ink, fingers slowly trailing lower.
But just as her hand reached down, Leroy seized her wrist in a tight grip. His face twisted with irritation.
“Who told you this tattoo was for you?” His voice was sharp, furious. “It’s for Jolie!
“Get out of my way!” In one sudden motion, he shoved her aside and

stood up. Jane hit the ground hard, utterly humiliated.

She scrambled to her feet and wrapped herself around his waist, her voice trembling with desperation.
“Roy, don’t go. I’m sick. If you leave me to be with Jolie, I’ll have an episode–I’ll kill myself, I swear!”
For a moment, Leroy hesitated.
Jane thought he was softening. But his next words cut colder than ice.
“I came to see you, didn’t I? What more do you want? I’ve given you comfort, I’ve shown you respect–but don’t push your luck.
“Don’t test my limits, Jane.
The blood drained from her face. She let go, biting her lip as tears brimmed in her eyes. “I’m sorry, Roy!”
Leroy scoffed and turned without another glance. He drove straight back to the house.
But when he walked inside, Jolie was nowhere to be seen. He turned to the butler, his voice low and tense.
“She’s not up yet?”
“No, Mr. Gibson. Strange–by now, she’s usually in the kitchen making your breakfast.”
Every morning, without fail, she’d be there–quietly bustling about, filling the house with the warm scent of food.
Ever since she moved in, the place had felt like a real home. And her cooking–just the sight of her at the stove made him feel hungry.

It had been too long.
He realized, suddenly, that he missed it.
Leroy stood and made his way to Jolie’s room.
He knocked—again and again—until the door rattled under his fist.
No answer.
A sharp dread surged through him.
BANG!
He kicked the door open, and his blood ran cold.
