Chapter 4
Across the ocean, I used my savings for facial reconstruction surgery. The scars gradually faded, and I was reborn.
In the mirror, my eyes no longer held confusion–steadfast calm had taken its place.
Leveraging experience from caring for patients in the Johnson family, I earned my nursing license and found work at an international hospital.
Here, no one knew my past. No one looked at me differently. I was simply a nurse, tending to each patient with skill and patience.
I was touched by his honesty and gentleness, and began to accept this new relationship.
David Wilson is a considerate person, never rushing me, always giving me enough space and time.
However, late at night when it’s quiet, I still dream of the man I once deeply loved and my daughter.
In the dream, Sophia is still the little girl who would act spoiled in my arms, and William is still the husband who smiled gently at me.
I know, no matter how hard I try, that memory is deeply etched into my
bones and can’t be erased.
By chance, I met an old man from China at the hospital, who was rushed there due to a heart attack.
The old man had no family with him, couldn’t speak the language, and seemed especially lonely and helpless.

I volunteered to care for him, communicating fluently in Chinese, which made him feel deeply comforted.
“Thank you, my dear. You’re truly my lifesaver,” the elderly man said gratefully, clasping my hands.
I simply smiled. “It’s just my job. Please focus on recovering.”
After his recovery, Thomas insisted I accept his gratitude and introduced me to his grandson.
“My grandson William is an exceptional young man. You two would be perfect together,” he enthused.
”
I politely declined. “That’s kind, but I’m content with my life as it is.
Before leaving, Thomas pressed a business card into my hand. “If you change your mind, contact me anytime.”
I tucked away the card, unaware this would become life’s turning point.
William searched for my whereabouts through various channels and finally got a clue from an old man who had just returned from abroad.
“When I was hospitalized abroad, I met a nurse from China. She was very gentle and professional, and her name was Emma,” the old man recalled.
William was so excited he could barely speak: “Can you tell me exactly which hospital?”
After getting the exact information, William immediately flew abroad with Sophia, eager to see his long–lost wife.
They arrived at the hospital entrance. William nervously straightened his collar, while Sophia tightly held a bouquet of flowers, her eyes full of anticipation.

In my neat nurse’s uniform, with the scars on my face faded, I was chatting intimately with a middle–aged man, a happy smile on my face..
That smile held a relaxed joy William had never seen on me in his
memory.
Sophia rushed over excitedly and hugged my leg tightly: “Mom! Mom! I found you!”
I looked down in surprise at my daughter who’d grown so much taller, momentarily at a loss.
“Sophia?”
I called softly, complex emotions surging in my heart.
William stepped forward, eyes filled with guilt and longing: “Emma, we finally found you.”
David watched the scene with confusion. I briefly explained to him, and he thoughtfully stepped aside to give us space.
William stepped forward, his voice choked with emotion: “Emma, I’m sorry. I’ve uncovered the whole truth. I wronged you.”
He knelt before me and pleaded in front of everyone: “Please, forgive me. Come home with me. Let’s start over.”
I looked at him, recalling the agony of having acid thrown on me and the despair of being accused by the whole family, my heart calm as still water.
“William, you know what? When I left back then, I thought I’d hate you for the rest of my life,” I said calmly.
“But now I find I don’t hate you anymore, because you no longer matter.

David stepped forward and shielded me: “Sir, please respect Emma’s choice. If she doesn’t want to talk to you, please leave.”

William glared at David in anger but was helpless, only able to watch as I turned and walked away.
Sophia wouldn’t let go, tightly clutching my sleeve: “Mom, don’t go, I miss you, I really miss you…”
I crouched down, gently stroking her hair: “Sophia, mom is no longer your mom, you have a new moin, forget me.”
Sophia shook her head, tears falling in big drops: “No, I only want you, I was wrong, I shouldn’t have listened to Aunt Emily…“.
My heart softened by my daughter’s tears, but reason told me I couldn’t go back to that place that hurt me.
“Sophia, take good care of yourself, mom will always love you.” I kissed her forehead lightly, then stood up and left.
William stood in place, watching my receding figure, his eyes full of despair and regret.
