That day, Frederick froze when he saw me.
“Anastasia, why are you wearing that?” he asked.
I used to love bold red before we got married. The shirt I had on was the first gift he ever gave me. I cherished it so much that when the house once caught fire, it was the only thing I thought to save.
At the time, Frederick had just gotten back from a trip. As soon as he stepped out of the car, he saw me standing there, clutching the red garment.
Guilt washed over him in an instant. He pulled me into his arms, his voice laced with worry as he muttered, “You little fool.”
Yeah, I was a fool
I was foolish enough to value our relationship above everything else, foolish enough to forget everything I was raised to be, just to fight for his affection like some jealous madwoman, and foolish enough to end up with nothing but a tragic end in sight.
“It’s just a shirt. I can wear whatever I want, right?” I replied.
My tone caught Frederick off guard. A second later, he turned on his heel and stormed off.
Either the house wasn’t well soundproofed or their voices were too loud, because I overheard Colette talking with Frederick outside the door.
“Freddie, Ana’s been faking this whole time. Why don’t I go with you to the party?”
But Frederick refused without hesitation. “No. Anastasia is my wife. She’s the only one who’s going with me.”
They were talking about the annual family gala. It was an event we had gone to together every year, all because he always said family should show up as a
unit.
However, I didn’t want anything to do with him anymore.
So, I opened the door and said, “Frederick, I’m not going to any more parties with you.”
Frederick was pissed off by what I said and didn’t come to see me for two whole days. Instead, Colette showed up.

With him gone, she dropped all pretenses. The second she saw me, she shoved me hard.
“Anastasia, I can’t believe how tough you are. Five months without food or water, and you still managed to make it out of the woods alive. But it’s too bad. The doctor says your body’s beyond saving. You’re dying.”
I shot her a sideways glance. She didn’t know it yet, but she was dying, too.
