Chapter 17 He Does Not Want a Divorce
Gabriel’s sudden appearance made Eleanor freeze for a moment.
She had thought Gabriel would need to stay in the hospital for at least a few days. How is he here already?
Seeing Gabriel’s gaze land on Ethan holding her hand, Eleanor instinctively pulled away.
Ethan could clearly see Gabriel’s anger and slowly curled his lips into a smirk. “Mr. McKenzie, weren’t you injured? Shouldn’t you be staying in the hospital a little longer?”
Gabriel ignored him and quickly walked to Eleanor’s side. “The doctor said you left before finishing your examination?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
Physical wounds were easy to heal, but emotional wounds were not.
She was surprised that Gabriel had come all this way. Is he here just to remind me to complete my checkup?
Her nonchalant response did not put Gabriel at ease.
“I’ll take you to the hospital for a full–body examination,” he said in a deep, firm voice, allowing no room for refusal.
Eleanor remained silent for a moment before turning to Ethan. “I’ll head back first. I’ll come and see the thing you wanted to show me next time.”
She suddenly thought of something and added, “I left Mr. Hudson’s gift in the dressing room. Please give it to him for me.” Gabriel pressed his lips together, his eyes darkening slightly.
No wonder Sienna had said Eleanor was meeting Ethan’s family, this situation really did resemble a formal introduction.
But fortunately, he had arrived just in time. Clearly, the introduction hadn’t happened yet.
Just the thought of Eleanor actually marrying Ethan made his temples ache.
Sensing the sudden drop in Gabriel’s mood, Ethan glanced at him lazily.
This girl listens to Gabriel so easily. Does she actually still like him? What’s so great about a guy who plays both sides?
Ethan chuckled freely, his tone laced with sarcasm. “Our family doctor is just as capable as the hospital’s. I’ll have him come over later to give you a full–body checkup.”
“No need to trouble yourself,” Gabriel said as he stepped forward and naturally wrapped an arm around Eleanor’s shoulders. “It’s late. She needs rest. Mr. Hudson’s birthday gift has already been delivered. We’ll visit another day.”
“Let’s go.”
The spot on Eleanor’s shoulder where Gabriel held her felt scorching hot.
“Wait” Ethan blocked their way. “There’s still something I owe you an explanation for.”
Eleanor knew he was referring to Renee.
Noticing the curious gazes of the surrounding guests, she quickly said, “It’s a small matter. No need for any explanations.”
It was a personal grudge between her and Renee. There was no reason for the Xander family to get involved.
But Ethan seemed determined to keep her there today, insisting on giving her an explanation.
Eleanor glanced at Gabriel, then at the fine beads of sweat forming on his forehead. She knew he was probably reaching his limit.
The burn he had suffered on his back from shielding her from the falling crystal chandelier couldn’t have been minor.
“Ethan, I have something to do. I’ll be leaving first.”

She nearly fled.
Ethan watched her go but didn’t stop her this time.
Once the test results were out, everything would be clear.
Right now, he had no right to interfere in her matters.
If the results proved she was truly his sister, the first thing he would do was beat Gabriel up.
She walked quickly, with Gabriel following beside her.
Once they stepped outside, the bustling banquet hall was left behind.
In the cool night breeze, only she and Gabriel remained.
The atmosphere grew awkward.
Before Gabriel could speak, Eleanor softly said, “Let’s go back to the hospital.”
This time, Gabriel obediently listened.
When they reached the black Maybach parked at the side, Eleanor walked over and pulled open the door.
There was someone inside.
“Gabe…”
Eleanor’s expression stiffened.
“You’re here?” Gabriel hadn’t expected Sienna to be there too.
“I was worried about your injury,” Sienna said in a soft, sweet voice.
Eleanor smiled faintly and closed the door without hesitation. “You two go ahead.”
“Ms. Weston, why don’t you join us?” Sienna politely invited her.
“Doesn’t that make you uncomfortable being in the same space as me?”
She was so direct that Sienna’s face immediately showed a trace of embarrassment.
She turned and walked away.
Perhaps afraid that she and Sienna would start a fight, Gabriel didn’t force her to get in the car.
Eleanor moved to the side and watched the Maybach drive off, a mocking smile curling her lips.
Of course, his first love is still the most important.
Just as she let out a derisive chuckle, Gabriel’s voice sounded beside her again. “What are you thinking about that’s making you smile?”
Eleanor turned back in surprise. “You didn’t leave?”
“I came to pick you up, how could I just leave you here alone?” He glanced in the direction the car had gone, narrowing his eyes slightly.
Following his order, the driver had taken Sienna away.
“You had a car but didn’t take it, and now you’re standing here in the cold with me.” Eleanor didn’t know what to feel. She muttered under her breath while scanning the surroundings. The banquet hadn’t ended yet, and there were few people around, only security guards patrolling.

The estate’s entrance was far away, making it unrealistic to walk out.
As if hearing her thoughts, she suddenly spotted a shared electric scooter under a tree.
These scooters were everywhere in the city.
“Do you know how to ride this?” Eleanor pointed at the vehicle.
Gabriel squinted slightly. He didn’t, but it looked simple enough. He nodded.
“Then let’s make do with it.” Eleanor walked over, scanned the code, and gestured for him to take the seat.
Gabriel hesitated for a moment before getting on.
Eleanor was relieved to see it was a two–seater. She sat in the back, pinched a fold of his jacket, and said cheerfully, “Alright, let’s go.”
One second, two seconds…
Half a minute passed, but the scooter remained still.
“What’s wrong?” Eleanor’s eyes widened. “Gabriel, don’t tell me you don’t even know how to ride an electric scooter.”
Gabriel stiffened.
He really didn’t.
The scooter looked small, but for some reason, it had so many buttons.
“Forget it, let me do it.”
She pushed him off the seat and took over, forcing Gabriel’s tall frame to squeeze into the back.
“Hold on tight…”
With that, she twisted the throttle, and the scooter shot forward.
The wind lifted her long hair, strands brushing against his face.
A light fragrance lingered at the tip of his nose, making his dark eyes deepen.
“Gabriel,” her voice floated in the wind.
“Mm.”
His response was faint, but the wind made it sound unexpectedly gentle.
“We can get divorced tomorrow, right?”
Eleanor thought he hadn’t heard and repeated the question.
Gabriel remained silent, coldness flickering in his gaze.
He had taken Eleanor away from Ethan’s “meet the parents” moment, yet that still hadn’t changed her decision to be with
Ethan.
“Hey, Gabriel, don’t tell me you don’t want a divorce now?” Eleanor teased when she didn’t hear his response.
“What if I say I don’t?” Gabriel asked.
Eleanor’s grip on the handlebars slipped, and the scooter nearly toppled over.
She quickly steadied it, her heart pounding wildly.
Loser! Why is my heart pounding? It’s not like he has feelings for me.

“It doesn’t matter what you say.” She gritted her teeth, reminding him, and reminding herself, “Did you forget what on our wedding night?”
That night, he had told her he wouldn’t love her. Other than money and status, he had nothing else to give.
She had clung to false hope for three whole years.
Now that his first love is back, I’ve finally made up my mind to divorce him. And now he suddenly doesn’t want to? Not a chance!
