Chapter 5
Gerard was fuming when he found out Remy had broken into the café.
So before Elise could even finish the movie, he dragged her out and
rushed back.
On the drive, the car radio happened to be broadcasting a news alert.
“A serious incident just occurred at a popular coffee shop in the city–an employee was found trapped inside a cold storage unit. Their condition is currently critical…”
Before the report could finish, Gerard clicked the radio off with a scowl.
He muttered, “What kind of incompetent shop lets something like that happen? Leaving someone locked in the freezer? Absolutely irresponsible.”
As the ambulance raced down the road from the café’s direction, Elise started to feel a pang of anxiety.
She looked at the flashing lights behind her and suddenly clutched her head. “Gerard, can you slow down a little? I feel carsick…”
Concerned, Gerard immediately eased his foot off the gas. He drove slowly, deliberately blocking the ambulance behind them that was trying to overtake them. Meanwhile, he glanced at Elise, full of concern.
“Better now, Elise?”
The ambulance behind blared its siren in frustration, its horn screaming.
One of the medics leaned halfway out the window and yelled, “Move!

Chapter 5
We’ve got an emergency patient!”
Gerard just scoffed. “What does your emergency have to do with me? Elise is not feeling well. If she falls ill later, will you take responsibility?
He then added with a sneer, “That employee probably got themselves locked in because of their laziness. Serves them right! People like that deserve a little punishment from the heavens.
“If I don’t put you in your place now, you’ll think it’s okay to cut off anyone. Holding up my Elise has already made me lose a ton of money!”
The ambulance crew was shaking with rage.
Luckily, Remy reacted fast.
“Call traffic control to clear the road. I’ll handle the consequences,” he
ordered.
With help from the traffic police, the ambulance did not wait any longer. It swerved sharply into the side lane, sirens screaming, and sped past Gerard’s car.
Gerard flew into a rage the moment he saw it. He immediately yanked the steering wheel, trying to cut back in, but it was already too late.
He was so mad that he started cursing.
If the police had not called just then, Gerard–blinded by anger–would have likely stepped on the gas and chased after the ambulance to argue.
“Mr. Toussaint, good afternoon. A major safety incident has taken place at your café. We have reason to believe this might constitute indirect intentional harm. The primary suspect is an employee of yours, Mr. Aguirre. We’d like you to assist with the investigation.”
Gerard was stunned, his face turning pale.

“Who got hurt that it caused such a big commotion?”
“Judging from the situation, it looks like your girlfriend, Adrienne Renaud.”
The moment Gerard heard my name, it was like a bolt of lightning exploded in his head.
His hands trembled violently.
“Impossible. There’s no way…
“Didn’t she already leave ages ago?”
He mumbled in disbelief, then slammed on the accelerator and sped straight to the café.
When he arrived and saw the cold storage sealed off by police tape, he finally lost it.
A gut–wrenching cry tore from his throat.
“Adrienne!”

He charged toward the cold storage like a madman, only to find the scene inside a complete mess–ice everywhere from the water he had thrown in
earlier.
On the floor lay faint ashes of what looked like burnt paper.
The air was still thick with a subtle scent of burning, mixed with the biting chill.
Even the seasoned officers were startled by how freezing it was, and the grim atmosphere made them frown.
With bloodshot eyes, Gerard stared at the scene, his voice shaky.
“Didn’t they say the backup power was down? It was about the same temperature as outside?
“Where’s Gustavo? Wasn’t he the one doing inventory today? Didn’t he tell me Adrienne had already left?
“No. Where is she? Where’s Adrienne?”
