Chapter 9
Before Elise could finish her words, Gerard kicked her to the ground.
The police were caught off guard, not expecting him to explode like that.
However, before they could restrain him, he had already stormed over, grabbed Elise by the hair, and dragged her straight to the entrance of the cold storage with pure rage in his eyes.
“If you could do that to Adrienne, then you should know exactly how it feels to be betrayed and left to freeze!” he growled.
Without hesitation, he snatched a high–powered flashlight from an officer nearby. The metal edge at the bottom scraped a deep line across the back of Elise’s soft hand.
It did not bleed much, but the pain was enough to make her shriek.
Before she could react, he shoved her into the open cold storage.
He was about to slam the door shut when several officers rushed forward and tackled him, forcing him to the ground.
Cold air surged from the chamber as Elise collapsed inside, her terrified screams echoing through the space.
I survived, but barely.
If it had not been for Remy’s quick thinking–breaking open the cold storage door with a fire axe, rushing in to scoop me up from the icy floor, and using his own body warmth to bring life back to my frozen hands and feet…

Chapter 9
If he had not contacted the traffic police on the way to the hospital to clear a path for the ambulance…
I would have died there, frozen solid inside that metal tomb.

Even so, I still went through 72 hours of emergency treatment, suffering severe frostbite in multiple areas–especially nerve damage in my hands- before being dragged back from the brink of death.
Remy stayed by my side the entire time.
Then Gerard showed up.
I had just opened my eyes when I saw his fake, eager smile leaning over
- me.
I immediately turned my head away in disgust, refusing to even look at
him.
To my surprise, he did not look the least bit ashamed. Instead, he rushed over with an apologetic face and said, “Adrienne, I’m sorry. Honestly, I just wanted to teach you a small lesson back then–I never thought things would spiral like this.
“I’ve already paid for all your medical bills. That nasty Elise got what she deserved. The police are investigating her, and she won’t be able to get away. So please, don’t hate me anymore, alright?
“I really didn’t expect you to get hurt this badly, but Adrienne, I love
you…”
Before he could finish, Remy cut in coldly, “She might’ve recovered better if some jerk hadn’t blocked the ambulance on the way to the hospital. That jerk drove slowly on purpose all because his sister was carsick–like that mattered more than someone’s life.
“Gerard, any idea who that was? That license plate looked a lot like
yours.”
Hearing that, Gerard’s face went pale, then red.

“I’m sorry, Adrienne! I swear, I was just manipulated by Elise. She’s in police custody now, and the evidence is solid. She’ll pay for what she did.
“If the police hadn’t stopped me, I would’ve locked her in the freezer myself and let her freeze to death!
“But I helped you get revenge, didn’t I? Please, don’t leave me. I’ll treat you even better from now on!”
I turned my face away and closed my eyes, refusing to even look at him.
Because sometimes, silence cuts deeper than words.
Sure enough, Gerard started to panic. He dropped to his knees beside my hospital bed, still trying to plead with me. However, that was when several officers came rushing in, grabbed him, and pulled him up.
“Gerard Toussaint, time’s up. You’re under formal arrest for multiple offenses, including causing serious injury through negligence and obstructing emergency services.”
Even as he was being dragged away, he kept yelling back at me, “Adrienne, please! Don’t leave me! I’ll make it up to you when I’m out! I love you! You can’t be with Remy!”
