Chapter 4
Kaiden and I found ourselves in an unexplained silent war.
At the start, we slept with our backs turned to each other.
Eventually, Kaiden decided to move to the second bedroom.
Though we shared the same roof, we felt like strangers.
My phone buzzed, so I stepped out onto the balcony to answer, “Fiona, your request for an overseas assignment has been approved. It’s for one year, and you’ll be leaving next month. Please start preparing.”
I asked, “When exactly is it?”
The person on the other end replied, “It’s up to you.”
I paused briefly, then said, “Let’s go with the 10th next month.”
Right after I ended the call, another number popped up on my phone. It was a staff member from a sales office, “Ms Gannon, your house viewing appointment is approaching. Are you still available?”
I took a deep breath and replied, “Sorry, please cancel it.”
I hung up and turned around to find Kaiden standing in the doorway of the second bedroom, holding a glass of water, watching me.
I paused for a moment, then pretended not to notice and walked toward the master bedroom.
Kaiden called out to me, his tone somewhat distant. “10th next month?

What’s happening that day?”
From his tone, I realized he might have misunderstood.
I wasn’t in the best mood, so I answered calmly, “It’s just a business trip.”
Kaiden immediately softened his tone, “Then, take care.”
I looked at him. Honestly, when he called out just now, I had hoped he would confess everything to me.
Sadly, he didn’t.
I shifted my gaze away, said nothing, and closed the main room door behind me.
Kaiden stared at the spot where I disappeared for a long while.
After a moment, he let out a soft sigh, rubbed his forehead wearily, and walked back to the second bedroom.
The living room was silent and still.
Only two doors faced one another.
The transfer was complete, but a few tasks still needed to be handed
over.
The interns I managed were now capable of working independently.
I shared some of my connections with her.
The young girl pouted and asked, “Fiona, did my dad ask you to help me again?”

I smiled and reassured her, “Don’t worry. Even though your dad is my boss, he can’t make me do anything. You’re my student. I’m leaving for abroad. Who else should I share my connections with if not you?”
The girl was visibly touched.
“Fiona, you’re so kind to me–better than my dad!”
I felt a mix of amusement and confusion.
The girl clung to my arm and suddenly noticed the emerald bracelet on my wrist, her eyes widening in surprise.
“Wow, Fiona, is our business really that profitable?
“A pure green emerald bracelet? That must cost at least a million dollars!”
I was shocked, staring at the emerald bracelet on my wrist, and without thinking, I mumbled, “It’s fake, not worth much.”
“How can that be?” the intern girl replied.
She grabbed my wrist and inspected it closely, “My mom loves emerald, and I’ve been around it since I was a child. I have a sharp eye. Your bracelet is definitely real!”
I felt a bit dizzy.
I wanted to say something, but I stayed quiet.
This emerald bracelet was a gift from Kaiden.
How could it possibly be a fake?

A sudden sadness hit me, like biting into a lemon. My heart tightened, and it felt hard to breathe.
It was the third year of our relationship.
Kaiden and I had our first serious argument.
It started when I bought a pair of rings on Valentine’s Day, hoping he’d
wear one.
But he refused.
We talked for a while, and eventually both of us got upset.
I threw the ring box at him, “Kaiden, are you going to wear it or not?”
Kaiden didn’t say a word, but his actions spoke for him. He tossed the ring into the trash.
At that moment, a wave of frustration and sadness hit me all at once.
That night, I moved in with a friend.
We didn’t talk for a whole month.
I felt heartbroken, wronged, angry, and even a bit regretful, but my youth and pride wouldn’t let me apologize first.
Besides, I didn’t think I was at fault.
Three months of silence passed.
I almost came to terms with the idea that Kaiden and I had broken up.
But fate had other plans, and we crossed paths again.

It happened at a high–end cocktail event.
I was there as my boss‘ secretary, helping him avoid overdrinking, but someone took advantage of the situation.
I had no choice but to keep dodging.
Just when I couldn’t take it anymore, the person suddenly screamed and was grabbed by the neck from behind and dragged out.
I recognized him immediately. It was Kaiden.
After a brief moment of hesitation, I lifted my skirt and ran after him.
In that instant, only one thought filled my mind. This lifetime, I would lower my head just once. And if Kaiden refused, then it would truly be over for us!
But when I saw him, tears started falling before I could even say anything.
Kaiden looked at me in surprise, then gently wiped away my tears, “Don’t cry, your makeup is ruined.”
I asked him, “What are you doing here?”
Kaiden replied, “Just like you, I came here to accompany my boss.”
I then asked, “Then, are you getting fired now?”
He sighed and said, “No, our boss is a woman, and she can’t stand anyone getting their hands dirty.”
I couldn’t help but laugh.

As I regained my composure, I started wondering how to apologize.
Out of nowhere, I felt a chill on my wrist. I looked up to see Kaiden placing a bracelet on it.
He smiled and said, “I lost the ring. I’m sorry I couldn’t find it. This is my family heirloom, only give it to the daughter–in–law, and now I’m giving it to you.”
I stared at it for a moment.
“It’s so green. Don’t tell me your family heirloom was made from a wine bottle?”
Kaiden’s face held a hint of something hard to read.
“Well, if that’s what you want to believe.”
From that point on, I’ve treasured this bracelet.
Some people noticed and mocked me for wearing something so fake.
I never responded to them.
And so what if it’s not real?
To me, it’s a symbol of Kaiden’s affection for me.
Now that the secret is out, what I thought were just Kaiden’s playful comments were probably the truth all along.
I ran my fingers over the emerald bracelet.
It was meant to be a family heirloom, passed down to the daughter–in- law.
