Chapter 8
I paused and greeted him, “Hello, Mr. Xavier.”
When Kaiden heard the unfamiliar title, a brief look of confusion
crossed his face.
I gestured for him to sit and got right to the point, “You wanted to meet, right? I’m here. Let’s discuss our collaboration.”
Kaiden stared at me for a moment before asking, “How has the past year been for you?”
I paused for a couple of seconds before responding, “It’s been great.”
Kaiden seemed to relax, responding, “That’s good to hear.”
I suddenly felt a tightness in my chest.
What does it mean that he seems relieved to see that I’m alright?
I had thought I wanted to see Kaiden again
But now, at this moment, I realized I didn’t.
All those thoughts of his over the past year were just habits.
The truth is, I didn’t love him as much as I had believed.
I set my pen down firmly and said, “Kaiden, let’s focus on business.”
He blinked, taken aback for a moment, then nodded.

For the next twenty minutes, his demeanor was entirely professional.
If the Xavier family hadn’t monopolized the market for this technology, Kaiden and I probably wouldn’t have crossed paths again so soon.
Once the contract was signed, Kaiden handed me another copy to review.
I skimmed through it and was surprised to see that Kaiden was willing to forgo half of the profit.
I shot him a quick look.
Kaiden met my gaze, his eyes focused intently on mine.
I signed the contract without any second thoughts.
Noticing that I wasn’t interested in continuing the conversation, Kaiden stood up and left. He grabbed the door handle but suddenly paused, turned around, and said, “Fiona, the wedding is off.”
I froze, quickly turning around, but by then, Kaiden was gone.
After leaving the meeting room, I handed the signed contract to Nicholas.
He skimmed through it, his eyes widening in surprise. “You’ve got Kaiden wrapped around your finger! He’s just handing you money without a second thought!”
His bluntness was hard to ignore.
Nicholas followed me to my office, then leaned in and asked, “Is Kaiden your ex?”

I nearly spat out my drink.
Nicholas leaned closer with a grin, “I knew it! You feel guilty, don’t you?”
I was beyond irritated. “Get out!”
He gritted his teeth and retorted, “So, rules for thee but not for me, huh? You always told me not to mix personal feelings with work, but you two act like there’s still something between you. That’s a bit much!”
His chest puffed out dramatically.
I shot him a look and ordered, “Get the plan ready tonight. I’ll review it
tomorrow.”
Nicholas scoffed, slammed the door, and stormed out.
The next morning, as soon as I sat down, Nicholas knocked and
entered.
He dropped a USB drive on my desk and said, “Here’s the project plan! Don’t you want to check it?”
I paused, remembering the events from yesterday.
I remained silent.

I noticed the large, dark circles beneath Nicholas’s eyes, hesitant, as if I wanted to say something but couldn’t find the right words.
However, I stayed quiet and focused on the project plan instead.
After some time, my frown eased, and I complimented him, “Not bad,

you’ve made great progress.”
Nicholas folded his arms and proudly replied, “Exactly! I was just messing with you earlier. If I didn’t show you my real abilities, would you really think I’m just a clueless rich kid?”
I couldn’t help but feel speechless as I saw him looking down his nose
at me.
I waved him off, signaling him to leave.
But Nicholas stayed put.
“Is there something else?”
He shrugged nonchalantly. “Well, I know about you and Kaiden.”
“Mm, so what?”
Nicholas’s face shifted slightly. “So, you’re not still holding on to those lingering feelings for that jerk, are you?”
I paused for a moment, then lifted my chin and said, “Get out.”
Annoyed, Nicholas snapped, “Is that all your can say to me?”
I shot back, “Want me to say it again?”
He fell silent, then turned and stormed off in frustration.
