Chapter 38
I really wished he’d shut up, so I lowered my eyes and didn’t say a word.
I thought he’d leave then.
But Harlan still didn’t seem to want to let me go. He said with malice, “Charlene, the girl Ashton’s going on a blind date with isn’t someone you can compare with. I advise you not to have unrealistic dreams. You and Ashton are worlds apart.”
“Okay,” I said noncommittally.
He frowned slightly, looking a bit suspicious.
Finally, it was quiet. I breathed a sigh of relief. After a while, I took out my phone to call a taxi to the hospital.
“What are you going to the hospital for?” Harlan asked, his voice suddenly ringing out, scaring me so much that I almost dropped my phone.
I didn’t expect he was still there.
I didn’t answer, and he got angry, snatching my phone away. “I’m asking you!”
I looked at him calmly. “Give me my phone back.”
He snorted coldly and grabbed hold of my wheelchair with one hand. “Do you like Ashton that much? He’s just going on a blind date, and you’re acting like you’re going crazy?”
I had no idea how he reached that conclusion, but transferring Shane was urgent, and I couldn’t afford to delay.
I said to Harlan patiently, “I have other matters to take care of.”
He clearly didn’t believe me. “Fine, then I’ll take you there. I want to see what you’re up to!”
I bit my lip and stared at him.
He stared back stubbornly, and in that persistent gaze, I knew I couldn’t change his mind.
So be it. Free labor was not to be refused.
I opened the car door, intending to sit in the back, but he stuffed me into the passenger seat.
I looked up at him, and he sneered. “Thinking of running away? Not a chance!”
I leaned helplessly against the seat and glanced forward, my movement pausing slightly.
Harlan’s car had changed a lot. There were many more doll decorations inside, and the style was obviously Tamara’s.
I had just fastened my seatbelt when someone knocked on the car window.
I turned my head and saw Tamara’s pale face right in front of me.
Harlan rolled down the window, and Tamara’s voice trembled as she said, “Harlan, didn’t you say you had something to do? Why are you with Charlene?”
Harlan’s expression didn’t change. “I’m taking her to the hospital.”
Tamara glanced at me, seeming to make up her mind about something. “I want to go, too.”
I frowned slightly, almost able to tell that if Tamara came along, there would definitely be arguments.
Shane couldn’t see, and I didn’t want him to be disturbed.
Before Harlan could agree to Tamara’s request, I said, “Forget it. I’ll go by myself.”
Harlan grabbed my hand, which was trying to unfasten the seatbelt, and looked at me with a complicated expression.
1 struggled, but I couldn’t break free.
Just as I was about to speak, I heard Harlan say to Tamara, “Tamara, be good and go home first.”
His voice was full of authority, and I saw Tamara’s eyes redden, but Harlan didn’t change his mind.
Yet I could feel that his grip on me tightened even more.

Chapter 38
I was extremely annoyed. It was as if I were some villainess in a romance drama.
“Mr. Shannon, I don’t need you to accompany me,” I said.
I didn’t know what I said that annoyed him, but his expression changed, and to my surprise, he said to Tamara coldly, “Can you be sensible?”
Tamara had probably never been spoken to like that by him before, and her eyes immediately filled with sadness. Without a word, she turned and left.
Harlan pursed his lips and started the car.
I glanced through the rearview mirror and saw Tamara staring at me with a gaze full of resentment.
I rubbed my aching forehead, feeling extremely frustrated.
