Chapter 39
After leaving the garage, I told Harlan the location of Shane’s hospital, and we traveled in silence.
He seemed to want to say something to me a few times, but ultimately, he remained silent.
When we arrived at the hospital, I got out of the car with difficulty, and he had already prepared the wheelchair.
Seemingly unable to bear watching me struggle, he directly picked me up, startling me so much that I almost swore at him.
But the next second, he placed me in the wheelchair, and my harsh words turned into a “thank you.”
He looked at me coldly. “Tell me. What do you want to do?”
I gave him Shane’s room number and asked him to wheel me there.
Harlan sneered. “Are you hiding someone in this hospital?”
I ignored him, and in silence, we reached the ward door.
I opened the door, and when Harlan saw Shane, his steps paused for a moment, and he fell completely silent.
I knew him well. This was his way of showing he was at a loss.
Thinking about it, I had been with him for so many years, and he never cared about my family, not knowing that I had a younger brother.
Shane was awake at that moment. Hearing the sound, he excitedly asked, “Is that Charlene?”
I made a sound of affirmation, wheeled myself over, and said softly, “Have you had enough fun here, Shane? How about we go to another hospital for a couple of days?”
The smile on Shane’s face gradually faded, and within a minute, his eyes welled up with tears as he said, “Charlene, don’t you want me anymore?”
“How could that be?” I touched his face. “I’ve found a great doctor for you. We’ll have the surgery in a couple of days, and you will get better, Shane.
Shane’s smile was very forced. “Is it going to cost a lot of money?”
I chuckled. “No. Don’t worry about it, Shane.”
He fell silent, and after a long while, he softly said, “Charlene, I don’t want to have the surgery.”
“How can that be?” I frowned. “Don’t you want to get better, Shane?”
Shane said, “Charlene, I don’t want to be your burden anymore. I know my condition is very bad. I… I’m almost deaf.”
I couldn’t hold back, and tears rolled down my face.
“Your name is Shane, right?” Harlan suddenly spoke.
I immediately looked at him warily, but he didn’t look at me, his brows and eyes unusually soft. “Don’t you want to play with your sister in the future? Don’t you want to listen to her tell you stories?”
Shane was stunned, tears still hanging from the corners of his eyes. “Are you my sister’s boyfriend?”
I was about to deny it when I heard Harlan say with a smile, “Yes.”
I was stunned as Harlan continued, “Don’t you want to see what your sister’s boyfriend looks like? Be a good boy and have the surgery. You still need to check out your sister’s boyfriend, don’t you?”
Looking at his profile, I suddenly felt that he was attractive when he was not quarrelsome.
Shane seemed to be persuaded by him. After a long while, he said softly, “Okay, I’ll have the surgery, but you can’t mistreat my sister.”
Harlan said gently, “Sure, I won’t.”
I had to admit, at this moment, I was grateful to him.
If it were me, I definitely wouldn’t be able to calm Shane down so quickly.
Shane couldn’t afford emotional fluctuations in this condition.
I breathed a sigh of relief as Harlan chatted with Shane for a while longer. Then he began to help me with the transfer procedures. As he hustled around, there was a lot going on in my heart.
