“Does Mr. Beau have any known drug allergies?” the doctor asked

A suffocating silence filled the elevator. Eventually, Mary retrieved Beau’s recent medical records from Taylor.
The doctor flipped through the documents, inhaling sharply. “Four allergic reactions in ten days? Mr. Fisher, is this really your son?”

Elara stood at the doorway, pulling her scarf tighter around herself against the cold night air
“I compiled all of Beau’s medical records since the day he was born into a file and handed it over to Mary.”
Harvey’s piercing gaze landed on Mary like a blade.
Mary nervously clutched the fabric of her dress. “If you want me to search for it in the storage room now, I wouldn’t even know where to start! Mrs. Fisher, just tell the doctor directly what Mr. Beau is allergic to ”
Harvey added, “Just tell them.”
Elara’s voice came through the phone, crisp and unwavering. “One million dollars.”

“Before I left the Fisher family, I handed over all of Beau’s medical records to Mary. I did everything a mother was supposed to do! I even instructed Mary to give you the documents to review.
“Mr. Fisher, did you ever take a look at them?”
Harvey fell silent. If he had gone through the records beforehand, he wouldn’t be calling Elara now.
Elara continued, her voice laced with mockery. “You had Frank wake me up in the middle of the night and force me to take this call.
“So, Harvey Fisher, if you want your son’s medical information–pay for it”
Harvey’s anger surged like a blade, cutting through the phone line. The air grew tense inside the examination room, and everyone held their breath.
“Elara Jones! Beau is your son!”
Elara’s voice remained cold. “Beau should already know what he can and cannot eat. The reason he ended up in the hospital is simple because he never once saw me as his mother!”
