Chapter1
Everyone in Northbridge knew one thing: Julian Lancaster lived for Charlotte Wynn.
He once shielded her from a pencil tip in kindergarten, climbed trees to catch cicadas that disturbed
her naps during their teenage years.
When they reached adulthood, he surprised everyone again.
One offhand remark, “Spring is beautiful,” prompted him to buy apartments in every city that
blossomed in spring.
He planned to whisk her away on spontaneous getaways wherever flowers bloomed.
Except for the brief lapse during his amnesia, Julian had given her his unwavering devotion for a
lifetime.
Even after they got married and Charlotte was diagnosed with ALS, when the entire city urged him to divorce her, he only tightened his grip, carrying her unresponsive body on his back, climbing the monastery’s prayer–inscribed stairway, laying her hand on the carved word “Life” as he prayed for her to pull through.
Yet that very man sat through a frigid winter night, cradling her presumed–dead body in silence. When dawn broke, he pressed his forehead to her cheek and whispered,
“Charlotte, I’ve fulfilled every duty I owed you in this life. If there’s paradise… I hope you’ll let me
be with her.”
The last sense to fade after death was hearing.
It was only then Charlotte realized, the man everyone believed was hopelessly in love with her had already split his heart in two the moment his memories returned.
One half was responsibility toward her.
The other… belonged to Bianca Sterling.
The woman who found him when he’d lost his memory, and whom he chose to die for once he remembered everything.
Maybe Julian’s sincerity moved the heavens, because when Charlotte opened her eyes again, the
first thing she heard was her assistant’s anxious voice by her ear:

“Mr. Lancaster has lost his memory. He refuses to come back with us.”
“But we’ve contacted the most renowned neurologist in the field. He’ll regain his memories soon.”
It was the exact same conversation she had heard before, when she’d found Julian after he’d gone
missing.
But this time, there was no joy. No urgency in her heart.
She pressed her temples to ease the pounding ache and shook her head. “No need to call the expert. Not yet.”
Then she did two things.
First, she went to the hospital and underwent a full, thorough medical examination.
Second, she

The couple was shocked, but Charlotte calmly laid out the reasoning:
“Julian’s lost his memory. He doesn’t remember me, or our engagement.”
“If he recovers and finds himself being dragged down by someone like me, who would die from a terminal illness, it would be better to leave things as they are, let him marry the woman he truly wants. I don’t want to drag him down anymore.”
She meant every word.
In her previous life, she truly believed she and Julian were in love.
Even when diagnosed with ALS, she never thought of leaving.
She had believed real love could overcome anything.
But when the truth came out in the end, it tore that belief to shreds.
Julian never loved her.

His heart had always belonged to someone else.
Mrs. Lancaster, Julian’s mother, clutched her hand, eyes red with tears. “You silly child. How could we or Julian ever see you as a burden? If he knew you were sick, he’d only blame himself for not protecting you better.”

“And besides, he loves you so much. How could he possibly marry someone else…”
Charlotte said nothing.
She simply opened the video her assistant had just sent.
On the screen, behind the enormous glass panel of the Coral Reef Aquarium, a woman in a
shimmering pink mermaid tail was twirling underwater.
Sunlight filtered through, casting golden flecks over her.
Outside the glass, Julian stood silently, his eyes filled with a tenderness and wonder Charlotte had
never seen before.
The woman in the tank suddenly glanced in his direction and gave a playful wink.
In that instant, warmth flooded Julian’s expression, like spring melting the final frost.
The look in his eyes could drown a person.
It was as if the beauty of the entire season had settled into his gaze, yet the only reflection in it…
was that flash of pink.
When the video ended, silence fell across the living room.
Charlotte turned to the stunned faces of Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster and spoke again, her voice calm:
“This really is the best decision, for both Julian and me.”
After a long pause, Mr. Lancaster wiped his face with a trembling hand and rasped, “And what…
what are you going to do next?”
“When my brother went abroad years ago to expand the business, I stayed behind because of the engagement. I’ve troubled you and Mrs. Lancaster all these years.‘
Charlotte lowered her gaze, hiding the emotion in her eyes. “Now that he knows about my condition, he’s already applied for permanent residency on my behalf. Once the paperwork’s done, I’ll leave the country.”
“There’s a top–tier medical team overseas. Hopefully… I’ll get a few more years.”
