morgue gurney.
No wonder it had been so hard to find him.
He hadn’t just disappeared, he’d been hidden. Kept away, out of sight.
Bianca spotted Charlotte then, and her smile instantly vanished.
She stiffened like she’d been nailed in place.
She quickly stepped between them and grabbed Charlotte’s wrist, her nails digging deep into
Charlotte’s skin.
Charlotte winced but said nothing.
Before she could speak, Bianca blurted out, panicked, “I didn’t mean to keep Julian hidden!”
Charlotte saw the panic in her eyes and said evenly, “You know the truth better than anyone.”
Realizing her cover was blown, Bianca bit her lip hard, her tone suddenly turning desperate.
“Charlotte, I know, he’s been in love with you, forever and only! If he gets his memory back, he’ll drop me and run straight back to you!”
“But I’ve loved him since the first time I saw him in high school! I’ve waited for years. He’s never looked at me, not once. This is the first chance I’ve ever had…”
“I just wanted to be near him a few days longer. Just a few days!”
Her voice cracked at the end, trembling with emotion.
Charlotte said nothing.
Her eyes were no longer on Bianca. Instead, they had shifted to Julian standing just behind her.
His expression was dark, his gaze locked onto Bianca, muscles coiled tight with tension.
The man who used to be her devoted protector had now become someone else’s guard dog.
He looked like he’d pounce the moment Charlotte so much as breathed the wrong way near Bianca.
She couldn’t quite put into words how it made her feel.
All she knew was, after living through this life a second time, she couldn’t selfishly tie Julian to her
anymore.

After all, to her, he had always been about duty, nothing more.
She smiled faintly at Bianca. “You got nothing to worry about. I’m not here to break you two apart. I’m just here to bring you both back to the Lancaster estate.”
Bianca flinched, clearly stunned. “Both of us?”
“You’re the one he loves. If I leave you behind, he won’t come back with us.”
Charlotte remembered what had happened before.
The bodyguards had forcibly dragged Julian home.
He’d gone wild, tearing at the bars of his locked window, shredding his hands until they were raw
and bleeding.
He even jumped from the third floor of the villa, stumbling down the road in a crazed attempt to
find Bianca.
Fearing he’d hurt himself again, Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster had shackled his hands and feet with
chains.
But he nearly sawed them off himself.
Even crawling, he was determined to reach Bianca.
He didn’t calm down until the doctor helped him recover his memories.
But that was also when he learned Bianca had taken her own life.
The news shattered him.
He fell into a long illness and nearly lost the will to live.
It had taken Charlotte whispering in his ear, begging him to survive, for him to finally open his
eyes.
But she hadn’t noticed then, that from that moment on, the look in his eyes whenever he faced her
had never held the tenderness he once had for Bianca.
“Go pack your things,” Charlotte said quietly. “You’re coming back to the Lancaster estate with Julian.”
Her voice remained steady. “Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster already know about you. They won’t object to

Bianca Sterling’s head was buzzing with questions.
She wanted to ask Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster if they blamed her for hiding their son.
She wanted to ask Charlotte Wynn if she hated her for stealing the man she loved.
But none of those questions made it past the overwhelming joy she felt.
She eagerly grabbed Julian’s hand and smiled brightly at him, then turned and hurried off to pack.
Only then did Julian seem convinced Charlotte meant Bianca no harm.
His tone softened slightly as he said, “Sorry. I thought you were here to hurt Bianca.”
His mood, as always, shifted with Bianca’s.
No one remembered how, back when Bianca used to pester him endlessly, he would grumble and
throw himself into Charlotte’s arms, acting wronged on purpose so she’d declare her position as the “official girlfriend.”
“You have to tell them I’m yours and only yours,” he’d whisper, his tone playful. “And say it with
some bite.”
He’d even scrunch up his face to show her how to look fierce, and they’d end up laughing together, tangled on the couch, lost in their private world.
But that Julian wasn’t hers anymore.
Charlotte curled her lips into a faint smile and brought them both back to the Lancaster estate.
Mr. and Mrs. Lancaster looked a little disappointed, but they quickly put on welcoming expressions
and began recounting stories from Julian’s past.
When it came time to introduce Charlotte, they hesitated, unsure what to say.
“T
grew up with you,” Charlotte spoke first, stretching out her tone in mock complaint. “You used to treat me like your baby sister. You even promised to find me a boyfriend. Now you’ve lost your
memory, and that promise has totally slipped.”
Everyone who knew the truth looked uncomfortable, but Julian didn’t catch on.
He even apologized, smiling as he said, “Alright, once things settle down, I’ll make it happen.”

“Sure. Once everything’s settled, you’ll help me find someone great,” she echoed, keeping up the
act.
His hand landed on her head, ruffling her hair with practiced ease, so naturally that even he looked
briefly surprised.
But he brushed it off, chalking it up to the old sibling dynamic.
Still, when he walked into his room and saw all the old items tied to Charlotte, photos, trinkets, little pieces of their past, a strange feeling crept into his chest.
Not wanting Bianca to see them, he quietly moved everything into the Courtyard Garden and lit a
fire to burn it all.
The flames woke Charlotte from her sleep.
She threw on a coat and came outside, only to see a blazing fire consuming every trace of their
history.
Photos from childhood, awards they’d won together, even the candy wrappers she’d saved… all
turned to ash with a crackling hiss.
The firelight cast Julian’s profile in flickering gold, the sharpness in his eyes catching the
moonlight, cold and unwavering.
A sharp pain shot through Charlotte’s chest, like something had grabbed her heart in its fist.
After her rebirth, she had kept herself busy, piling her schedule full to dull the ache.
She thought that if she never stopped moving, she’d forget the pain.
But now, standing still, it surged back with a vengeance.
She dug her nails into her palm, desperate not to let him see her fall apart.
At that moment, Julian turned and saw her.
He
gave her a calm smile, eyes clear and open. “Back then, neither of us had anyone else. Being close didn’t feel wrong.”
He paused, his tone more serious. “But now that Bianca lives here with me, I figured she wouldn’t be happy seeing these things. So I burned them. I hope you don’t mind.”
Charlotte shook her head and bent down to pick up a half–burned wooden doll.

They’d found the pair during a trip to Willow Tribe Village.
He had nearly slipped off a cliff trying to retrieve them.
The local elder had said that if two people each carried one of the dolls, they would be blessed with love that lasted through lifetimes.
But he would never remember that now.
“It’s alright,” she said softly. “Might as well burn what’s in my room too.”
The heat of the flames licked toward her skin, but all she felt was the chill sinking into her bones.
When the final piece turned to ash, she turned to leave, only for Julian to grab her wrist.
His expression held a touch of helplessness. “Can I ask you for a favor?”
Charlotte quickly understood what he meant.
In the Courtyard Garden, staff were hurrying about, setting up fireworks in the open space beside
the house.
Julian helped them carry the last batch over.
When he finished, he wiped the sweat from his brow, eyes sparkling in the night.
“Bianca’s still having a hard time adjusting. I’ve been trying to get her comfortable here. She
finally said she wanted to see some fireworks.”
He pointed at the boxes. “When they go off, there’ll be words in the sky. I don’t want the staff
messing it up. Can you help keep an eye on things?”
Charlotte blinked, almost asking him what he took her for.
But before she could speak, he added, “I just feel calm when you’re around. I must have really
trusted you before.”
His gaze was sincere. “Will you?”
In the silence, Charlotte gave a faint nod.
He immediately smiled and stuffed a bag into her hands. “These sparklers are for you. A little
thank–you gift.”

He
gave her one last head–pat and strode off, his steps hurried, eager.
One firework after another exploded above her, deafening in the night.
Charlotte tilted her head and read the glowing script in the sky:
Morning skies, evening clouds, walking or sitting, I think only of you.
Flowers in spring, snow in winter, awake or dreaming, I long only for
you.
