Chapter 9
When Zachary said that last sentence, he purposely raised his voice.
I could tell that he wanted me to hear it from within the tank. He really made me sick.
The stinking water had already flooded the floor. Nina fought back her nausea as she walked over. The opening in the tank
was just big enough for a person to slip inside.
She barely poked her head in before she jerked back. With a pale face, she screamed, “Zac! S–Sarah’s in there!”
Panic–stricken, Nina threw herself into Zachary’s arms to seek comfort. “Zac, s–she’s pretending to be dead and hiding in there just to scare me! She really hates me. I think I’d better leave her alone for now.”
With that, she turned to leave, but Zachary caught her wrist.
When he heard that I was “pretending“, his deep frown finally eased a little. “Don’t be scared, Nina. I’ll make Sarah get down on her knees and apologize to you. Alright?”
I bit down hard on my lower lip. I didn’t understand how my already–numb heart could still hurt so much from watching and hearing this.
Nina tilted her face up. “Really?”
Then, as if remembering something, she dropped her gaze and mumbled, “Forget it. I just hope Sarah doesn’t drive me away from you. As long as I can be by your side-”
“Mr. Finch! Mrs. Finch is gone!”
Bobby’s voice cut through the moment as he held a torn scrap of cloth in his hand.
Nina stiffened.
Zachary, on the other hand, frowned impatiently. “Nina just said that the bitch is inside, playing tricks and waiting for us to go in.
“A piece of cloth proves nothing. Clean up the scene now. Flush everything down the drain. I’ll deal with Sarah myself.”
