My grandmother was just as stunned. “That was more than a decade ago! They remember that?”
“Did you know the man who showed up at our door was the current Kenway patriarch himself, Grandma?” I asked. “He’s retired now, though.”
“No way! How could I possibly know? I saw his title and figured he was at least some Lieutenant General.”
“But he later became the General! God, these are the kind of people we wouldn’t dream of marrying,” my aunt exclaimed.
“What are you saying, Aunt Sarah? He’s just trying to repay me for saving his life. He’s not interested that way,” 1 clarified, giving myself a subtle reminder as well.
“Shh. We can fantasize a bit when it’s just between us, right?”
“If Taylor hadn’t gotten tangled up with that Kennedy boy, just this act of heroism could have been the start of something real. But… Well, the Kennedy situation got too messy and out of hand, and now you can’t even annul your civil partnership immediately…”
My mood darkened. I had about a dozen days left before the court opened our case.
I needed to talk to my lawyer to figure out how to get the court to immediately certify our divorce. I didn’t want to
go through this twice.
To my surprise, Edward called me before leven had a chance to bring my concerns to my lawyer. It wasn’t about the divorce, though.
“Maddie’s gone. Please come see her one last time,” he said tiredly.
I was surprised, but then again… Who didn’t expect that?
I wasn’t the type to hold a grudge against the dead, so I decided to go to the hospital.
I could hear Cameron howling and weeping from inside.
Maybe I should just stay outside.
Suddenly, the door to the ward opened. It was Edward.
Our eyes met. He had clearly been crying too.
“You’re here,” he said quietly.
I nodded and pointed at the door. “She’s still in there?”
“Mrs. Jones won’t let us remove Maddie. She’s been hugging her for half an hour,” he replied despondently.
He genuinely liked her, after all. But it didn’t matter to me anymore.
“I guess I won’t be going in then. I don’t want to make them feel even worse,” I said.
I remembered just how desperate Cameron had been to get me to donate my blood to Maddie two days ago.
Since I had refused, she would easily blame Maddie’s death someone who was already on her way there–on me.
There was no need to cause a scene.

I was about to turn away when Edward stepped into my pa. “Taylor.”
I waited.
“Now that Maddie’s gone… there’s nothing between us anymore, right?” he began. “I haven’t changed my mind. We’re not getting a divorce. We’ll be together for the rest of our lives–I’ll make it up to you from now on.”
I stared at him, stunned. In any other situation, I might have laughed.
“You didn’t ask me here for Maddie. You wanted me to listen to your absurd plan!” I shot back.
“I didn’t love her, Taylor. She was like a little sister to me. only did what I did to fulfill her last wish, and I don’t think I was wrong. Even if it made you furious, I don’t regret it,” he said, his voice devoid of shame.
