Sally demanded, “Divorce that witch this instant, or don’t ever call yourself my son!”
“You can’t abandon your own sister over a woman who doesn’t even care about you anymore! At least I did all of that for you! How could you treat me like I mean nothing? Edith cried.
A barrage of anger rained down on Edward. Even I winced at the relentless noise.

At that moment, my phone rang. It was Soren.
I turned and headed toward the door.
“You’re not going anywhere, Taylor! Delete the video, or don’t even think about leaving!” Sally roared.
I couldn’t help but feel amused. “You really think I didn’t make multiple backup copies? Your son could smash my phone to pieces, and it wouldn’t change a thing!
Edward had smashed my phone the other day, hadn’t he? Thanks to him, I’d had to buy a new one.
Sally was stunned.
Before I left, I heard her shout, “If you spread that video, the Kennedys will never let you go! I swear it!”
Tretorted, “If your son agrees to end this, no one else has to know. But if he doesn’t… well, heh!”
That seemed to refocus Sally on her real task–screaming at Edward in a desperate attempt to coerce him.
I closed the door, and peace and quiet finally returned.
Then I answered the call. “Hello?”
Soren’s gentle, soothing voice came through. “Are you busy? You took a while to answer.”
“Ah, not really. What’s up?”
“Nothing much. The court trial is today, right? Do you need me to… talk to them?”
I was touched.
“I appreciate it, but it’s alright. I have a plan,” I replied firmly.
“Hmm? Like what?”
“It’s… not something I can tell you. But I’m at an advantage” I said.
I had promised Sally I wouldn’t tell anyone as long as her son agreed to end this, so I intended to keep my word- even if that meant not telling Soren.
Naturally, if Edward sabotaged the case later today, I wouldn’t hesitate to make everything public.
“Hmm. You sound confident. I should have known to trust you more,” he replied.
A smile crept onto my face. “Ha, no! I actually appreciated your concern. Thank you… really.”
Why was he so invested in my divorce? Was he waiting for me to become legally single so he could finally break through that paper–thin wall between us and confess his feelings?
The tips of my ears burned. My heart raced.
“Come on. You saved my life. I’m happy to help in any way I can,” he said.

“Is that all there is to it?”
I didn’t know how those words escaped my mouth. They just… did.
“Huh?”
“I said… is it just
because I saved your life before? Is this just you repaying me for that?”
I held my breath. My heart pounded. I didn’t even know what had spurred me to try breaking down the wall
between us.
Had I grown bold because of my winning advantage? Because I was certain the divorce would happen, and I couldn’t wait to “plan ahead?”
After a momentary silence, Soren replied in an even softer tone, “What do you think?”
What did I think?
