Chapter 192
“Can you at least tell me why? Is it tny conduct as a person? Or are you worried about the rumors that might start to fly?” Soren asked.
My cheeks flushed even more, and I couldn’t meet his gaze Um… I… I just think… I’ve been divorced and… I don’t have the best reputation and…”
I trailed off, hoping he understood what I meant.
To my surprise, Soren simply shrugged and smiled. “I didn’s just learn that you ended things today. And you weren’t the reason your relationship ended. The man let it down. Why should you be at fault?”
“I know, but rumors can be damaging. Especially since your family is one of the noblest in this nation, and…” I stopped myself before I could continue.
The Kenways were as blue–blooded as it got. Anyone marrying into a family like that would have to be perfect in every way–looks, education, skills, family background.
As for me? I was from a mediocre family with a mediocre education.
Yes, my career was improving, but my father was locked up now, and my divorce was just another mark against
- me.
The only thing I had going for me was my looks–but even that didn’t compare to the beauties from elite families like the Kenways.
Soren sighed, his shoulders slumping slightly. “I’ve never thought being born into an elite family could be seen as a demerit.”
“That’s not what I meant!” I quickly explained. “There’s nothing wrong with you! It’s not you…. It’s me.”
He nodded. “I get it.”
Get it? I looked at him, confused. Did I just turn him down?
“Come on, let’s go inside. My mom’s been expecting you for quite a while now,” Soren said gently, not seeming upset at all despite my rejection.
I nodded, still feeling unsure of myself, and followed him inside.
Lisbeth greeted me warmly. “Taylor, dear! It’s been so long I thought Ren must have upset you, considering how distant you’ve been.”
I couldn’t help but smile. “No way, Madame Kenway! That’s not it at all. Mr. Kenway has been so helpful to me lately. I’m really grateful, so there’s no reason for me to keep a distance from you!”
“Is that so? Then you should spend more time with him. Young people should form close relationships, don’t you think? Make sure to get to know each other well!” she said with a playful twinkle in her eyes.
I hesitated, unsure of what she meant by that.
Was she hinting at something? I chose to play along, pretending not to notice the underlying meaning.
“Mr. Kenway, please go ahead and change into your suits. Let’s see if any alterations are needed,” I suggested.
“Alright. I’ll change upstairs,” he replied before heading up with a housekeeper who carried his suits.
Lisbeth pulled me toward the couch and sat me down, her gaze sharp and focused as she studied me for a moment.

“You’ve grown thinner,” she remarked. “I heard you’ve been through a lot lately. I can tell from how much smaller you’ve gotten.”
I felt uneasy under her scrutiny.
Was she sizing me up? Was she evaluating if I was worthy of Soren?
I had heard her and the rest of the Kenways discussing potential candidates the other day.
“I’m fine, Madame Kenway. My weight is about the same as always,” I said, trying to brush it off.
“No, no. You’ve gotten thinner, I can tell. Please eat more at lunch. Chef Remy’s preparing all your favorites,” she insisted.

“Thank you, Madame Kenway,” I replied politely, grateful for her concern. “You’re too kind.”
I remembered the gift I had brought for her and took it out of my bag. “A small present for you. It’s getting colder now, so I thought you might like a wool scarf.”
