Chapter 199
Jamie started toward the pantry. “What would you like to live, Miss Jones? Tea? Coffee? Or perhaps milk and juice?”
“Coffee will be good.”
“Got it.”
As he prepared my drink, I rubbed my forehead.
To my dismay, I could feel the swelling! I quickly tried to cover it with my bangs.
Jamie brought two cups of coffee over. “These coffee beans were gifts from a friend from Oz. Have a taste.”
“Thanks!”
I took a sip.
Before I could even savor it, Jamie suddenly asked, “Miss Jones, is your forehead alright? I think it’s… swollen…
I gulped down the coffee and tried to cover my forehead with my hair. “Oh! It’s, uh, nothing! I just bumped into something, haha.”
“It’ll recover faster if you put some ice on it,” he said, heading toward the fridge.
This office used to belong to Edward. He rarely stayed in his office for long, but it was well–equipped regardless. The pantry, fridge, lounge, and bathroom were all included.
Jamie found an ice pack and started looking for a clean towel to wrap it in. I told him he didn’t have to, but he insisted.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was Soren again.
He must have thought something bad had happened since I hadn’t replied to his message. I should answer before he gets too worried.
“Hello?” I answered quietly.
“Taylor, is your forehead okay? You didn’t reply to me, so I was worried that you might have fainted.” Soren’s voice was filled with concern.
“It’s fine. Just a little tap. My head’s pretty tough,” I replied.
“Please. Which is harder–human flesh or steel?”
1 bit my lip in silence.
“Is it swollen?”
“No. It’s just a little sore.”
While we were still on the phone, Jamie returned with a wrapped ice pack. He silently handed it to me, urg to hold it on my forehead.
I mouthed a quiet thank you.
Overhearing, Soren asked, “Is there someone else there?”
“A colleague of mine who’s also working over the weekend,” I answered.

“Are you sure you still want to work? Maybe you should rest after injuring your forehead like that.”
“Oh, it’s really nothing! Thanks for your concern, though.”
Honestly, I enjoyed how he was a little too overdramatic about every little thing I went through. I just didn’t know how to respond to it. It was only after I said that that I realized I might have sounded impatient.
Soren probably thought so too–because he fell silent.
My cheeks warmed a little. I was worried he misunderstood my tone. “Hey, um… I’m still busy with something else at the moment. I’ll call you later, alright? And it really is just a small thing. Don’t worry about it.”
“Alright. Don’t let me keep you.”
I hung up and sighed internally. I still felt bad.
Growing up, I rarely received love and concern. I had endured far more verbal and physical abuse than affection
That didn’t change even during the sweetest moments of my relationship with Edward. I was stronger than he was in some ways he was constantly sick, so I kept playing the role of caretaker.
He had grown
used to me being independent. Even when I was sick, he wouldn’t ask if I was okay. He simply believed I would recover quickly on my own.
But now, here was a man who noticed the smallest details and remembered them. A guy who would ask over and over if I was alright…
And I found it hard to get used to. I even thought he was being overdramatic.
But that wasn’t true at all.
