I didn’t say anything in response. Maybe it was true–maybe they were more than just “siblings” or friends. I certainly thought it was possible.
But it didn’t matter anymore.
“The food’s here. Let’s dig in,” I said, determined to change the subject.
As we were eating, two people passed by us.
Then, a loud, sharp voice called out, sweetly but sharply, “Oh my God, is that you, Taylor Jones? And Amanda Collins, too! I guess it’s for the centennial, huh?”
We both turned at the same time to see a young woman draped in jewelry and heavy makeup.
It took me a moment to finally call out, tentatively, “Is that you, Candy Frieze?”
Amanda, ever bold, added, “Who the hell operated on your face? I didn’t even recognize you!”
Candy’s expression faltered.
“Your mom never taught you how to speak?” she snapped.
Amanda pursed her lips. “She taught me honesty, at least.
I was determined not to let this escalate into an argument. This was my best friend’s restaurant, and I didn’t want anything to tarnish its reputation or business.
Thus, I changed the topic. “Did you come back from abroad just for the centennial?”
Candy crossed her arms and looked away, strutting a bit. “Not exactly. I’ve achieved quite a lot out there, and now I’m back to start my own business. I just thought I’d show up at the centennial to catch up with old friends.”

Congrats,” I replied, offering a smile.
Candy had been my coursemate too, but she was also my rival and nemesis back then. We had similar grades, the same social status, and even our looks were comparable. It almost seemed like a competition by default.
Of course, most of the time, I was the one who edged out with more recognition and honor. That only fueled Candy’s animosity toward me.
