My love for him seemed to be racing out of control in that dark, quiet night, just like his speeding car.

I snapped back to reality and looked at him, but he had already turned away.
“You’re awake,” I said, trying to move my stiff shoulder as my heart continued to race.
“Yes, I am…” Soren responded.
Suddenly, he pulled me closer with his free arm and held me in his embrace.

My breathing was erratic, and my nerves were on edge as I stared at him.
However, he didn’t look back at me. Instead, he rested his head against my shoulder once more.
“Hmm…” he grunted, clearly content. “This feels better…”
I sat perfectly still, too afraid to move, even holding my breath for a moment.
He seemed to notice, his nose brushing against my neck as he exhaled.
With a smile, he said, “You can breathe, silly goose.”
“Uhh…” My mind was racing.
My neck shivered as I felt his breath blow past me.
I started to breathe–huge, deep breaths–but quickly managed to steady myself.
We stayed like that for the rest of the journey, in silence.
Even though we weren’t speaking, our hearts were undoubtedly connecting.
By the time we reached my house, I had started to calm down and shake off the trance I’d been in.
That’s when it hit me–Soren might have planned all of this from the beginning. I was almost certain he had arranged to pick me up for the National Academy’s centennial so we could attend together.
In fact, he might have orchestrated everything that had happened before that, too. I wasn’t sure.
But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t figure out why he was so invested in me.
Could it be because I had saved his life twice in the past?
Soren’s car slowly came to a stop before I could sort out my thoughts.
He woke up and straightened up from my shoulder, leaving a damp patch on both of our skins.

Although the car was warm, the spot where he had rested felt cold, and I instinctively touched my shoulder.
“What’s the matter? Is your shoulder stiff?” Soren asked quickly, his voice hoarse with concern.
I turned to him and smiled. “I’m fine… What about you? Are you feeling better? You should really see a doctor if you’re still not feeling well.”
He nodded. “Okay, I will.”
I noticed he was getting out of the car as I did, and when I passed his trunk, he called my name and hurried over to

“Taylor,” he called out.
I stopped and looked at him, my heart still pounding wildly
“Don’t worry about whatever’s happening between you and Edward. I’ll take care of it if you’re sure about the annulment,” he reassured me.
It wasn’t the first time Soren had offered to help me with my divorce, but once again, I wanted to refuse.
“I can handle this. Don’t get involved,” I said firmly. “I know you have plenty of resources and can solve any problem, but stepping into this will only bring you unnecessary backlash. Even if the public doesn’t say it outright, they’ll gossip behind your back. That’s what’s truly frightening.”
My viewpoint hadn’t changed. Even if we became an official couple one day, I didn’t want him caught up in my past relationship and have others think he was a homewrecker.
Though Edward had betrayed me first, his actions were especially painful.
Soren just looked at me quietly, but I could tell what he was thinking. He probably believed I was rejecting his kindness and refusing to accept his help.
I smiled and took a deep breath, gathering my thoughts before speaking. “You said you’d wait for me, didn’t you? Are you starting to get impatient?”
I knew there was no turning back now.
As expected, Soren’s usual calm demeanor faltered. His eyes sparkled as he looked at me and asked, “Taylor… are you saying that you…”
