Chapter 252
I thought it was hilarious!
If a hexer that powerful really existed, I would’ve hired onto hex my damn sperm donor and have him die a long time ago!
“I haven’t done anything against my conscience, so let then say whatever they want,” I stated.
Jean looked concerned. “Are you sure you’re not worried this might affect your reputation and ruin your future with Soren?”
I froze. Soren?
“He’s from a prestigious background, so I’m sure he has very strict requirements for his future partner. If rumors like these keep spreading, it could…”
Jean didn’t need to finish her sentence–I knew exactly what she meant.
But what was I supposed to do? Honestly, I wouldn’t be good enough for Soren, even without those rumors.
I laughed, trying to sound calm as I changed the subject. “You’re overthinking it. He and I are from two different worlds, but he’d be a good friend to have around.”
But the moment I hung up, my mind raced, and a sense of disappointment crept in.
When Soren texted me that night, I told him I was busy at work and ended the conversation quickly.
Jamie had invited me to a company retreat they’d organized over the weekend.
Since it was already the end of the year and my staff had worked hard, I figured it was time for all of us to take a break and have some fun.
I didn’t want to be a party pooper, so I decided to join in.
The retreat was a two–day, one–night trip to an outdoor training camp in the mountains. We would hike in the morning and have a campfire at night.
As soon as we arrived and I stepped off the bus, I got a call from Soren.
I panicked a little when I saw his name on the screen, but after a moment, I decided to answer.
“Hello?”
“Are you up? The weather’s great today. Would you like to take a walk with me?” he suggested.
I glanced at the scenery around me and felt guilty.
After a brief pause, I replied, “I’m actually not at home. I’m at a company retreat with my staff this weekend.”
Soren chuckled when he heard this, but there was something off about his laugh.
“Looks like you still haven’t fully accepted me into your life…” he remarked. “You didn’t mention anything about it when we were chatting last night.”
I was taken aback, my cheeks flushing with guilt and embarrassment.
After a few seconds, I said, “I’m sorry…”

Chapter 252
“It’s alright. Enjoy your trip. We’ll talk when you get back.
With that, Soren hung up.
Although his tone remained calm, I could tell he was hurt and angry with my response.
My mood soured, and I couldn’t even enjoy the beautiful scenery in front of me anymore.
“Tay–Tay! Come on! Go put your bags in the tent. We’ll head for the mountains after a short rest.”
Cherry’s interruption brought me back to reality, and I joined the group.
The mountain was about 1,640 feet above sea level–nothing too high.
There was a specialized hiking trail, but most of my staff were young and into outdoor sports. Thus, they decided to ditch the trail and climb the nature path.
As the name suggested, the nature trail was undeveloped.
Cherry and I teamed up, helping each other out when necessary.
Everything was going well at first, but when we reached a steep section, Cherry lost her footing and nearly fell.
Thanks to my quick reflexes, I reached out to grab her. In doing so, though, I slipped on some pebbles and lost my balance!
I fell forward, my knees slamming against a rock. The pain was so intense that both my legs went numb for a moment, and I lost consciousness.
Cherry was frantic, rushing to help me up as soon as she regained her composure. “Tay–Tay! Are you okay?!” But I was in so much pain that I couldn’t make any sudden movements…
