I turned to look at him. He sounded commanding when he added, “Do you think you’re better than a doctor?”

I went off with the nurse to get the MRI scan.
Things were far worse than I imagined when the report came back.
“You have bone marrow edema from the trauma to your knees, along with effusion in the suprapatellar bursa and joint cavity,” the doctor said.
“We’ll start with conservative treatment, which will require at least four to six weeks of rest. Try to minimize movement and get plenty of rest during this time.”
The doctor delivered his instructions directly before handing me a prescription.
My mood sank. Frustration surged through me as I thought about the mountain of tasks I still needed to handle at the end of the year. Now my mobility was severely limited.
“Give her the best medicine you have. Use whatever treatment you think is necessary,” Soren instructed, his face cold as he glanced at me.
“Of course, Mr. Kenway. We’ll provide the best treatment available,” the doctor replied.
After that, the doctor signaled for the nurse to wheel me away for treatment.
I was terrified of pain–just getting an injection made me panicked.
So, when I saw a whole row of acupuncture needles in the treatment room, my fight–or–flight instincts kicked in, and I tried to run
“Can we skip this, doctor? I get really dizzy when I see needles…” I exaggerated, hoping to mask my fear.
The doctor looked puzzled. “You do?”
Soren stepped forward. “She’s just scared.”
I turned to glare at him.
The doctor quickly understood and reassured me, “This treatment won’t hurt. The acupuncture needles will help with your blood circulation. They’ll also relax your muscles and alleviate the pain. Your knees are severely swollen, so this will help absorb the accumulated fluid and bruising.”
As convincing as it sounded, I was still terrified.
Unfortunately, neither the doctor nor Soren had any intention of respecting my wishes.
“Would you prefer to lie down or sit?” the doctor asked.
The treatment bed looked a little too high, which would make it inconvenient for me to get on and off.
Nervously, I replied, “I’ll sit, please…”

A nurse quickly brought over a low stool, covered it with a sterile cloth, and carefully lifted my leg onto it.

The fear of needles faded. Instead, all I could focus on was as scent and the warmth of his touch.
Honestly, I wouldn’t even believe it myself if I said we were just friends at that moment.
A cool sensation brushed against my knee, making me shiver.
I could hear Soren’s gentle voice above me, saying, “The doctor’s just disinfecting your wound. Relax.”

Soon, I felt several needles pricking me continuously. My body tensed even further as I whimpered faintly, unsure if it was pain or just distress….
I only remember gripping his jacket, no longer caring about what our relationship was.
