Noticing my expression, Soren leaned in. “What’s wrong?”
I let him glance at my phone.
“What should I even say?” I grumbled.
He smiled. “Just tell the truth.”
“You’re going to go viral for a few days because of this.”
“I’m fine with that. I didn’t commit any crime to get here. Let it be,”
I bit my lip, feeling a little shy. “This isn’t how you were back then. You were mysterious, never staying in the spotlight for too long.”
“I don’t mind being in the spotlight once or twice if it means I can protect you.”
I was speechless.
I’d been asking myself the same question over and over–how had someone like me earned a man so flawless as my boyfriend?
I still couldn’t believe I was lucky enough to have his undying devotion, just because I’d accidentally saved his life twice.
Was my life unlucky or lucky? Or had meeting him been the single blessing of my life?
My phone rang, snapping me out of my stupor.
It was from a string of numbers I didn’t recognize, so I picked it up without hesitation. “Hello, Taylor Jones speaking.”
“So… You’re with Soren now.”
The familiarity of his voice made my smile freeze.
Edward had heard the news, too.
But I was in a good mood, so I continued the call. “Yeap, and I sincerely want to thank you for that.”
“You’re mocking me?”
I chuckled. “More like thinking, ‘Wow, you really are the blindest man in the world. You had everything, and yet you failed like a clown.‘ I want to thank you for ruining our wedding because that’s how I met the real man I’m meant to be with.”
Soren could tell from my tone that I was talking to Edward. His face darkened slightly, concern in his eyes.
I shot him a reassuring look.
“Oh, you really think the two of you will last?” Edward asked.
I sneered. “Why? It’s none of your business. With your health condition, I doubt you’ll even live long enough to see the end of our relationship.”
He fell silent, probably too enraged to speak.

“Don’t call me again, okay? The best ex is the one who vanishes from your life completely–like they’re dead. I can do that, no problem. You should try it too,” I finished, then hung up.
“Is he still bothering you?” Soren asked, his voice laced with concern.
I shook my head. “He hasn’t in a while. I guess he must’ve seen the news and got pissed enough to do something this childish.”
“You don’t have to answer him. I’ll talk to the Kennedys soon.”
“No, it won’t work. He’s gone crazy. No one can rein him in.” I hoped Soren wouldn’t get tangled up with the Kennedys. Those people were like curses.
Realizing he might not be listening, I added, “It’s better not to interact with them, Soren. I won’t answer his calls from now on, alright? He’s bedridden. He can’t show up in person anyway.”
Soren was silent.
I grew a little alarmed. “Hey, are you listening? You don’t have to bother with him. He’s not worth your time or effort.”
