“I know, I know,” Soren replied, ruffling my hair. “But even if I talked to him, I wouldn’t call it a waste of time or effort. It would be for you. Nothing I do for you could ever be a waste.”
I lifted my head and met his gaze, surprised. A warmth spread through me. He always had a unique way of framing things, and it was surprisingly persuasive.
“No, I don’t want that. Let’s not waste any more time on someone like him.”
“Your wish is my command.”
We locked eyes in silence.
Suddenly, I felt a shift in the air between us. His gaze was so intense, so focused, that my heart started racing as I remembered what might happen next.
If this were a drama, the way we were looking at each other, the chemistry, the tension–it would be the perfect setup for a typical romantic scene. Our faces would draw closer, and then, the man would tilt his head and kiss the
woman.
But we were in public! If anyone saw us, they’d cause a riot!

Panic set in. I quickly looked away and stammered, “Um, it’s getting late! I…”
He blinked, as if snapping out of a trance. I glanced down, blushing.
Soren cleared his throat, then looked at his watch. “It’s almost 1:00 a.m. Let’s get you home. Your knees haven’t fully recovered, so you shouldn’t be standing too long.”
He was right. I could feel the pain in my knees, my legs feeling stiff and mechanical.
I looked around. The party was still in full swing, with people enjoying cocktails, dancing, and playing cards. It seemed like it was winding down. “Are you sure you should leave?”
“It’s fine. Everyone knows I’m not into these activities,” Soren replied, nodding to those around us.
After informing them he was leaving, he turned toward the exit.
“What about Sol? Doesn’t she need a ride home?” I asked, concerned.
Soleil waved dismissively. “Please. I’m not a child. I can get home on my own.”
“I’ll be back for you later. Don’t run off,” Soren insisted.
“Oh my God, can you focus on your new girlfriend instead of me?” Soleil complained.
“Girlfriend or not, I’ll always be your brother.”
She pouted in mock annoyance.
Soren and I left after I bade everyone goodnight. We entered the elevator, and I gazed out the clear window. The river was still bustling with people, despite the late hour.
A thought struck me.
“How long did everything take you?” I asked.

Soren was checking his phone, but my question made him look up with a slightly uneasy expression.
“It didn’t seem like something you’d want to do,” I added with a smile, “Especially since you prefer to keep a low profile.”
He raised an eyebrow, clearly proud. “Yeah, well, it was Ritchie’s idea. But I made some improvements.”
Despite his public image as an esteemed aristocrat with a dark, ruthless side, right now, he looked like a schoolboy eager for praise.
I smiled and played along. “Let me guess. Turning it into a picture book was the improvement?”
He grinned and nodded. “You wouldn’t let me intervene with what people were saying about you online, but you didn’t say anything about me expressing my feelings.
“When it comes down to it, I was the one who wanted to approach you, not the other way around. If anyone should face any moral judgment, it should be me.”
