“No, I’m fine,” I said.
It stung to lose 1,300 bucks, but it wasn’t exactly a shot to the chest. Besides, I didn’t want to be the type of girl who immediately spent her boyfriend’s money as soon as they got together.
“It was fun overall. It’s been a while since I played cards, so I don’t mind,” I said.
“Yeah. You did sound like you were having fun,” Soren replied, his tone apologetic. “I’m sorry for leaving in the midst of our first date. I was even worried you might be mad about it. But seeing that you’re with our friends now makes me feel better.”
“Is that why you’re calling me right now?”
“Yeah. You got me. I’m still working, and I’m worried I’ll be up late. You should have dinner and head home soon. Your knees will thank you.”
Gosh, everyone had the day off for New Year’s, yet he was working overtime. The thought made my chest ache.
“Yeah, I got it. Don’t worry about me, okay?” I said softly. Try to finish early so you can rest.”
“I know. Bye for now.”
“Bye.”
Jean mimicked my tone after I hung up, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “Whatever happened to the Taylor Jones I remember? All I get now is a lovestruck girl!”
I raised my hand. She ducked.
Just then, a beep from my phone caught my attention. Soren had sent me 1,300 dollars!
[I told you I didn’t need it though!] I texted before quickly transferring the money back.
He sent it again.
Soren: [I didn’t get to spend New Year’s with you. I didn’t buy you a gift. Now I can’t even give my girlfriend some pocket money? I’m feeling pretty humiliated.]
Me: [But I told you, I don’t need it! You’ve done so much already!]
Soren: [Keep it. Have dinner, then get back to your game. Maybe you’ll win what you lost.]
I chuckled softly to myself.
Jean had somehow peered over my shoulder. “Look, girls! Mr. Kenway refilled her funds! You know what that means—one more game! One more game! We’ll play after dinner!”
The girls went wild as I stared at them in disbelief.
What kind of company did I keep?!
The next day, I returned to work.
The combination of my workload and the time I had taken off to rest after my injury had piled up, forcing me to work overtime for two days.

Soren had wanted to take me out for lunch and dinner, but turned him down every time.
On the third day, Cherry rushed into my office.
“Don’t run in like that,” I scolded. “Where’s the business proposal I asked you to print?”
“I didn’t have time. Someone showed up at the office. I had to come get your.”
I looked at her, confused. “Who could’ve made you so nervous?”
The door to my office opened, and a towering figure appeared. “Hey.”
My eyes locked onto him as though I were hypnotized.
Cherry giggled. “Guess I’ll hand in the proposal tomorrow, Tay–Tay.”
She dashed out in a blur.
Soren walked toward my desk, and I quickly looked away, my cheeks burning. “W–Why are you here? You didn’t tell me you were coming!”
He was so tall that his waist was above my desk. He bent down, looming over me.
“I’m here to check on my girlfriend. Did I need to make an appointment for that?” His voice was calm, and his smile was faint.
