To be honest, there was nothing wrong with what he said. You could even call it bootlicking in front of your boss.
But that wasn’t how Soren saw it. Once we entered the elevator, he turned to me with one eyebrow raised. “Oh, you treated him really well, didn’t you? How exactly?”
I shot him a look. “Well! I pay him generously! I’m a very, very generous boss.”
“That’s it?”
“That’s it!”
He narrowed his eyes. “Why did you swing my hand away from you?”
I smiled helplessly at him.
“Are you jealous?” I asked pointedly.
Soren was just as blunt. “A little, yes. You admire him. And he doesn’t seem to see you as just his superior.”
I laughed and raised my hand. “I solemnly swear that I admire him only for his competence. As for what he thinks of me in return? That’s pretty much out of my control,” I said.
“Besides, Lord Soren, aren’t you supposed to be at the pinnacle of power and prestige? How is it that you’re showing such low confidence? That’s just insane.”
“I’m confident in myself, but you have a tendency to doubt yourself, to think you don’t deserve me,” Soren shot back. “So if a guy with a more similar background and social status comes along, you’ll likely start feeling something for him.”
My heart skipped a beat. Was that really what I would do?
Honestly… yeap. Of course, I had to comfort him.
“No, that’s not gonna happen. Since being with you, every other guy no longer impresses me. I’m never lowering my standards for them.”
Soren seemed mollified. He ruffled my hair, pleased. “You’re good at saying the right things.”
“Because I mean them.”
We had dinner, then took a stroll down the street as the winter breeze blew. His driver trailed behind us in the car.
Some people recognized us and took unsolicited photos. Soren told me to ignore them and stayed close to me the whole time.
Nobody bothered us beyond gossiping under their breath and snapping a few pictures. Maybe they were wary of the power he held, or maybe his hulking size was a deterrent.
I was starting to get used to it.
I was single–what was wrong with a single woman dating another guy? I hadn’t betrayed anyone. Wuy should I act like our relationship had to be a secret?
The way I felt about our relationship was completely different from what it had been like when I dated Edward. I really loved what I had with Soren. It made me feel safe.

A breeze blew by. I pulled my collar closer around my neck.
Soren rubbed my cheeks, frowning. “Let’s get inside the car Better not catch a cold.”
We got into the car. He drove me home.
Even with the driver present, Soren kept holding my hand. Our palms were sweaty by the time we arrived at my place, but he still didn’t want to let go.
I checked the time on my phone. It wasn’t even 9:00 p.m. yet.
I thought about how many times I had unintentionally turned him away from our dates and hesitated before asking, “Would you like… to hang out in my apartment for bit?”
He looked up, surprised. “Really?!”
