Chapter 317
“I heard he’s from a prestigious family. Don’t they mind your status as a divorcée?” Lola asked.
1 laughed scornfully, “So what if I’ve been divorced? It’s not like I killed someone.”
“I’m just looking out for you! Quit being so sarcastic and ungratefull”
“Oh, thanks, then! I’m busy, so goodbye.” I moved to end the call.
“Wait! Let me finish!” she cried.
I sighed and put the phone back to my ear. “What?” “Do you l
you know your dad’s fallen ill? It’s serious.”
1 knew it. The real reason she called was Harry.
“What illness? Think he’ll die before Spring?” I chirped glitly.
“How dare you?! Taylor, he’s your father! He raised you. How about showing a little heart?” Lola chided.
“I did ask what illness he has. And whether it’s fatal. That counts as concern, doesn’t it?”
Silence stretched between us before she finally said, “He’s always had high blood pressure and diabetes. He managed his health before prison, but, well… it’s not exactly a place for recovery. His condition deteriorated, triggering other complications. He can’t walk. His blood vessels are failing, too.”
Ha! This was unexpected. Was–divine punishment real after all?
He betrayed his in–laws, bankrupted them, and sent my grandfather to an early grave. Then my mother followed.
After that, he married Cameron–already pregnant with her precious fraternal twins–and they turned my life into hell.
I still remembered the time Cameron stripped me of my clothes and left me outside in the snow, refusing to let me in.
Harry had been so furious with me that day that he kicked me into a dog cage and told me to reflect on my
behavior.
And then there were Maddison and Miles. Those little demons loved tossing filth onto my bed and into my room. Now, it seemed like they were finally getting what they deserved. Maddison was dead. Harry was barely hanging
- on.
That left only Cameron and Miles. I wondered what the universe had in store for them.
“Taylor? Are you listening? Your dad wants a compassionate release. Cameron borrowed money from me to hire a lawyer. But you’re his daughter. You should take care of him!”
Ah. There it was. The real motive. She’d done her part by lending Cameron money, and once Harry was free, she wanted nothing more to do with it. The burden would fall on me.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t anyone’s doormat.
“He has a wife and a son. He doesn’t need me.
“Cameron’s working for you to pay off her debt! She has no money, and Miles is just a useless troublemaker!” Lola snapped.

1 snickered. “So it all comes down to who’s weak enough to ake the hit.”
21 didn’t mean”
“My dad’s company is in your hands, Aunt Lola. You’re his ster. Watching him suffer must be painful for you. If you don’t help, well… maybe your business luck will suffer too.”
