Everyone was trying to win Soren’s favor, maneuvering to get a few words in edgewise.
I could tell we were going to be here for a while.
“Come on, let’s take a stroll! We’ll walk around together!” Soleil suggested. “See, we always have this gathering around this time. It’s hard to get everyone together during Brigidlia, you know? Everyone’s always off spending it somewhere else, all around the world.”
I remembered hearing about this tradition from Jean.
The elites of Metropolis hosted countless parties, but the Joneses were never invited. They were considered too low on the social ladder.
And I? I was the unwanted daughter of the Jones family. I had even less chance of being invited.
Jean Valentine, however, was different. A true elite, she had attended these parties before.
I wondered if she was here.
I scanned the room.
Soleil thought I was shaking my head. “Oh, come on. Ren can’t keep you company right now. He’s stuck with those guys! But… he’ll look for you later.”
“No, not that,” I said, “I was trying to see if Jeannie is here.‘
“Oh, right! Is she?”
Soleil looked around with me. When we didn’t spot her, I texted Jean and found out she was attending her company’s event.
Soleil grabbed my arm and began to lead me away. “We’ll hang out with Jeannie some other time. Let’s go!”
“Okay.”
I entered the hall. The party had a live band–and one that was gaining popularity, too. I couldn’t help but enjoy their music.
Then, I heard a commotion from the far end of the hall.
I looked over and immediately spotted the source of the disturbance–Edith.
Why was she here? She should still be recovering in the hospital after her surgeries.
Our eyes met. I saw hatred and rage in her gaze. This was bad.
I slowly looked away, ready to hide if it meant avoiding conflict. I wasn’t going to embarrass myself in front of so many people.
Unfortunately, Edith had no intention of letting it slide.
“Where do you think you’re going, Taylor? You almost became my sister–in–law, remember? And now you’re not even going to say hi?” she shouted.
Clearly, she was here to stir trouble.
By chance, the music stopped. In the sudden silence, everyone heard her, and all attention turned toward us.

“Sol, let me handle this,” I whispered, stepping in front of her.
Edith was here for me, so I didn’t want Soleil to get hurt.

I smiled at her gratefully.
“Hi, Edith. I thought you’d still be recovering right now. How are you feeling?” I asked calmly, hoping to send a subtle warning. She’d better not cause trouble while her body was still weak.
Unexpectedly, Edith took it the wrong way. “What’s that supposed to mean? Trying to get everyone to know I just had an abortion?”
The crowd murmured among themselves.
“So it’s true! She’s pregnant with…”
“I really hoped the rumor was false.”
I frowned. I couldn’t understand why Edith would do this to herself.
Edith ignored the crowd and focused solely on me.
“You ruined my life, Taylor. What do you plan to do to make it up to me?” she demanded.
