Something I had once read flashed in my mind: “Man Rejected by a Woman: Returns with Sulfuric Acid!”
“Watch out!” I shouted to the crowd, shoving Soleil aside and raising my arm to shield my face.
In that instant, a towering figure shot out from the crowd like a bolt of lightning. Within seconds, his presence engulfed me.
“Aaah!”
“It burns!”
“Wash the area where it hit you now! It’s acid!”
The entire hall erupted into chaos. What had been a night of celebration turned into a frenzy of screams and the pounding feet of terrified people.
My ears rang with a high–pitched whine. I could hardly process what had just happened.
Edith had lost her mind. She was completely mad.
“Are you okay?!” Soren asked urgently.
I looked up and, for the first time, truly saw his face. That moment snapped me out of my shock.
He had shielded me with his back.
“Take off your clothes, Soren! Now!” I pushed him away and grabbed at his coat.
“I’ll destroy you, bitch!” Edith screamed. “You ruined my brother, me, and my family! I’ll fucking tear your life apart! I’ll fucking-”
A few men charged at her, pinning her to the mat. One struck her wrist, knocking the bottle from her hand as it fell.
I couldn’t spare a glance at her. Soren was more important. He was wearing a business vest under his coat, and I needed him to take it off too.
He was lucky Richard had pulled him aside to talk as soon as he arrived. He hadn’t had a chance to remove his coat. If he had…
The coat, now discarded on the ground, darkened rapidly, turning black as the acid spread across the fabric.
The crowd watched in horror.
If even a drop of it had touched skin…
“Did any of it get on you, Soren? This is concentrated sulfuric acid!” I asked, frantic, inspecting him closely.
Thank God the coat was thick enough that his vest had remained untouched. His white shirt was unscathed.
“I’m fine, really,” Soren reassured me, his voice calm.
I couldn’t believe him. He was still frowning–was he in pain? I wanted to rip his shirt off to check, but he stopped me by taking my hand.
“I’m fine,” he insisted. “It burned a little on my back, but once we got my coat off, it didn’t hurt anymore.”
He spoke like he was embarrassed to have his shirt removed.

Rage and fear consumed me. “What the fuck, Edith?! Have you lost your mind?! You’ll be in prison for this, you idiotic terrorist!”

Soren’s icy, piercing gaze locked onto the men holding Edith down. “Stop wasting time. Get her to the police!”
“Y–Yes, sir!” they said in unison, sounding more like his subordinates than wealthy heirs themselves.
