Edith wasn’t going to listen easily. She scanned the room and suddenly shouted, “Martin!”
A young man stepped out from the crowd, his hand over his face as if trying to remain unnoticed.
He yelled, “What the hell did you do this for, Edith?! You’re killing me! If I’d known you were just here to pull this shit on Taylor, I never would’ve brought you! Your sentence is only being deferred, for God’s sake!”
I recognized him immediately. He was Martin Brown, Edith’s cousin and Sally’s nephew.
Soren turned to him, his gaze icy. “You brought her here, Mr. Brown?”
Martin waved his hands defensively. “I didn’t know she’d do this! She’d been recovering at home, complaining about boredom. My aunt suggested I take her out on an excursion, and I-”
Soren cut him off, turning suddenly to me. “How do you want this settled?”
I had been staring at Soren’s back for a while, worried that the acid might have damaged his shirt, maybe even hurt him. His abrupt attention pulled me from my thoughts
“The police. We’ll let the law handle it,” I said.
I didn’t want to do anything that might seem like I was exploiting Soren’s power or influence.
Edith was still under probation. After this, she was definitely going to prison. I didn’t need to do anything more.
“And you need to apologize to everyone you dragged into this!” I added. “If they need medical or psychological treatment, you should cover the costs!”
“Why should I? They all sided with you, so they should all Mmm! Mmrff!”
Before Edith could finish, Martin slapped his hand over her mouth. “Apologies to everyone here today. We’ll definitely pay for all of that!”
“How dare you, Martin?! You’re supposed to be on my side! You’re my cousin! How dare you join everyone here to gang up on me!” Edith screamed, her voice filled with hysteria. “I’ll ruin you, Taylor! I will ruin you!”
She was still shouting when the police arrived.
Recognizing the presence of Metropolis‘ elites, they understood this was something that had to be reported immediately.
“Mr. Kenway? Please come with us to the station. We need your eyewitness statement.”
Soren opened his mouth to respond, but I cut him off, “Please, can we go to the hospital first?”
“That’s fair, ma’am,” one of the officers replied.
Edith refused to go with the police. She struggled so violently that it took three officers to pull her away.
“I’ll fuck you up, Taylor! You did this to me, to my brother you’ll pay for your sins!”
Theard her hysterical screams fade into the distance, a shiver running down my spine.
I turned to Soren, but he spoke first. “Are you okay? Did your arm get hurt?”
“I’m fine!” I insisted, then touched his back, worry flooding me. “But what about you? Are you sure you’re Do you still feel any burning? We need to get you to the hospital quickly…”

“I’m feeling much better.” He glanced at his coat. “Thanks to that.”
