Dude, seriously? Just how intense was his split personality disorder?
Without missing a beat, I scooped another piece of fish with the ladle and placed it in Jamie’s bowl.
“Thank you, Ms. Jones,” Jamie said quickly, looking visibly uneasy.
He then responded to Soren’s comment. “Rest assured, Mr. Kenway. We colleagues always look out for one another.”
“Relax, I can take care of myself. I’m not a child,” I said, hoping to reassure Soren.
I’d long since learned how to stand on my own.

Soren had clearly invited Jamie to dinner just to throw out comments like that deliberately putting him on the spot while subtly marking his territory, as if announcing I was his woman.
He didn’t actually expect Jamie to look after me. He just wasted to ensure Jamie didn’t start getting any ideas about being with me. And knowing how petty Soren could be, he’d probably lose his mind with jealousy if Jamie ever did try to take care of me.
After dinner, on the way home, I couldn’t hold back anymore.
“Can you stop targeting Mr. Young? He and I are really just colleagues, and you made things super awkward for me just now,” I said.
Soren didn’t even try to hide it and replied openly, “I suppose I’ll let him off the hook for now. He probably won’t be entertaining any more ideas about you after tonight.”
I was rendered speechless once again.
Honestly, I thought he was overthinking it.
I was a divorced woman with plenty of baggage. Sure, I had some looks, but there were way more beautiful, younger women out there. There was no reason for any outstanding man to be interested in someone like me.
To this day, I still couldn’t figure out what made Soren fall for me.
The car fell into silence.
I stared out the window and realized we weren’t heading home.
I turned to him. “Where are you taking me?”
Soren glanced at me. “How about we stay at my place tonight?”
I froze, and my heart suddenly became chaotic.
What was he trying to imply? We’d just met his family earlier that day, and now he wanted to take things a step further?
“Relax. I told you I’d always respect you,” he said, picking up on my unease. “I just thought we should spend more time together since you’re leaving on your business trip tomorrow. We won’t see each other for a while.”

He chuckled and let go, putting his hand back on the wheel.
We arrived at his lakeside villa and got out once the car was parked.
I followed him toward the house
The night air was cold, but my chest burned with warmth.
My gaze drifted upward, drawn to his tall, lean frame and the effortless confidence in his stride. Even the back of his head looked majestic.
At that moment, I realized I was completely done for my thoughts, my heart, everything, utterly consumed by this growing infatuation.
The warmth inside the house hit me the moment we stepped in.
Soren looked back and said, “I activated the house AI before we got here.”
I nodded. “I see…”
An awkward silence settled between us. We couldn’t even look each other in the eye.
Soren took off his coat and tossed it onto the sofa. Then he poured a glass of water and came back
“Aren’t you going to take off your coat? You’ll start sweating soon if you don’t,” he said with a faint smirk when he saw how stiff I was.
I pressed my lips together, feeling awkward, but I had no choice. I took it off.
Underneath, I wore a fitted Rococo–style dress that hugged my waist and emphasized my figure.
Almost instinctively, I hunched my shoulders slightly.
He glanced at me silently, then turned toward the elevator. I’ll head upstairs and get the room ready. Rest for a bit, then come up and take a shower, alright?”
