My chest tightened in shock.
Edward had always seemed mild–mannered and humble. His family had consistently worked to project a positive image as well. They were always at the top of the list of leading philanthropists.
The truth, however, was startling–to put it mildly.
Soren explained, “This started as a dispute between the workers and their agency, so the Kennedys weren’t originally responsible. But to prevent the case from tarnishing the project’s reputation, the Kennedys spent a fortune covering it up.”
He sighed. “I didn’t want to bring this up during such a joyous festival as Brigidlia, but Edward keeps showing up to trouble you repeatedly, leaving me no choice. I’m afraid that it’s time to rid the city of the Kennedys.”
I stayed silent for a while. Once my thoughts settled, I nodded. “Anyone who commits a crime has to face the consequences. No exceptions.”
“It’s good to hear that from you,” Soren said. “I was actually worried. I don’t want you to think I’m doing this just to remove my love rival…”
“What?!” I stared at him, stunned. “I was already disappointed with the entire Kennedy family when I first told you about this. His fate, especially in this matter, has nothing to do with me. And let’s not forget Edith losing her. mind and harming you and Sol that day! I’m still upset about that!”
Soren smiled gently and sighed in contentment. “Aha. Looks like I’ve finally taken Edward’s place in your heart.”
“Please. He can never measure up to you.”
The words slipped out before I could stop them.
Suddenly, I noticed a shift in Soren’s gaze. My chest warmed.
He stared at me so intently that my cheeks began to burn. “What are you looking at? We have a banquet to attend. You should accompany me and be my knight.”
I took his hand and led him outside.
He quickened his pace, tightening his grip around mine. “Of course, milady. I am your humble knight.”
We changed into fresh clothes before heading to the event hall at another venue.
To my surprise, Edward was there too! How had he managed to get in?
Our eyes met, and I knew he was going to make my evening miserable.
Soren was clearly displeased. “I’m going to talk to him.”
I grabbed his arm. “No!”
Something about Edward felt off. I could tell he was no longer reasonable. “He’s trying to bait us, Soren. If you go, you’ll fall right into his trap.”

There was no telling if Edward had something up his sleeve so it was better to avoid engaging with him. He could get away with the most outrageous things because he had nothing to lose.
On the other hand, we could not afford such recklessness.
Soren listened to me and followed my lead.
I became the center of attention at the event. Guests came to chat, clink glasses, and congratulate me. Soren stayed close by, ever the loyal knight.
As the evening wound down, I scanned the room and realized Edward was gone. I had no idea when he left.
“Soren, I need to visit the bathroom. We can leave after that” I told him, feeling the effects of having drunk a little too much
“Alright. Be quick,” he said.
I returned from the bathroom and ran into a few other fashion designers. I chatted briefly with them again.
