Chapter 401
Soren enunciated slowly and emphatically, but if this was um being sentimental and sincere, I didn’t buy it for a second.
“You can’t leave me because you need my blood,” I replied.
“No.” Edward shook his head. “My disease is almost cured. A year ago, I went to Rouche for treatment. They invented a new therapy specifically for people with my blood type.”
That explained why he looked healthy enough to blend in with the average person. Yet, despite being close to recovery, he had come to Medhelanon instead of spending Brigidlia with his family.
Seriously, all of this just to get under my skin?
Edward leaned closer and took my hands in his. “You and Soren are impossible. It won’t work. But you and me? I’m recovering soon. With my feelings for you… Do you understand? We can start over. We can be together again.”
“Are you insane, Edward? You just blamed me for your family’s problems today! And now you want us to be together again?”
Melancholy darkened his face, but hate still flickered in his eyes. “You’re right about one thing. My family won’t accept you now.”
I bit my lip, saying nothing. I genuinely suspected he needed mental help, just like his sister.
I didn’t want to hear any of these meaningless words. My limbs were growing numb.
“Let me go, Ed. Even if I agreed to start over with you, it wouldn’t matter. What you’re doing is illegal! You’ll end up in prison!” I said. “Let me go, and I can at least pretend this was just a bad joke and that it never happened.”
Edward didn’t move.
“Did you hear me?” I said again, exasperated.
“No. I’m not letting you go. If I do, you’ll just run back to Soren. If it weren’t for him, you wouldn’t be so determined to divorce me or leave me without a second chance.”
“You’re wrong, Ed. The problems between us have never had anything to do with anyone else. Even if Soren didn’t exist, I still wouldn’t want to be with you again,” I said, pushing my hands toward him. “Now release me.”
“Never.” He stood slowly, leaning in closer. “The two of you had sex, didn’t you?“”
His words disgusted me. I just wanted to get as far away from him as possible, but his question told me exactly what he was planning.
“You never gave me the chance all those years we were together. But you let him in after just a month.”
I couldn’t risk further provoking him. I had to tell him the truth. “No. Nothing like that happened between us.”
He smiled. “Still lying? Or are you afraid of what I’ll think if you tell the truth?”
I couldn’t even respond. He was mad. He’d twist everything I said.
“It’s okay,” he murmured, caressing my hair. “I can always find out for myself.”
“Don’t, Edward! Stop it!”
“You told me we couldn’t have sex because I was sick. But I’m getting better. I’m healthy now, and I’m ready. Let me show you, Tay–Tay.”
