I laughed scornfully as the memory of the drone performance on New Year’s Day resurfaced.
“Hey, I can’t make you believe me if you don’t want to. Everyone else has already accepted the truth, and I know I haven’t done anything wrong,” I said.
She was about to argue more when my phone rang.
“Hello? Yeah. Unit 803. She’s still here,” I answered.
Sally’s face drained of color. “You called the cops on me?!”
“You barged into someone’s house uninvited, so yeah,” I shot back.
Just then, a few officers arrived.
I exchanged a look with my grandmother, who immediately understood what needed to be done. She clutched her chest, her face contorted in pain.
“Sirs… Please! This woman intruded into my grandmother’s house and caused her to have a heart attack!” I cried out, pointing at Sally.
“What?! She’s faking it! She is faking it!” Sally shrieked.
“Do you live here, ma’am?“! one of the officers asked.
“No, but I’m here on business! Listen, this woman is Taylor Jones! She’s been slandering my son!” Sally babbled, clearly flustered.
Luckily, the cops weren’t swayed by her ranting. They asked her to show her ID, which she claimed she didn’t have with her.
“Then you’ll need to leave and follow us to the station,” the officer said firmly.
“B–But I wasn’t done!” Sally stammered, her voice wavering.
The officers moved quickly, escorting her out the door. I told my aunt to take care of my grandmother and followed them outside.
“What’s the point, Taylor?! I still know where your grandmother lives! I can come here every day and do this! You won’t be able to stop me unless you guard that door!” Sally snarled.
“Sirs, did you hear that?!” I exclaimed. “She’s planning to do it again!”
The police, unimpressed, barely reacted. Who would confess their evil plans in front of authority?
The neighbors had gathered to watch the spectacle, and Sally’s embarrassment deepened. She began hurling insults at me in a fit of rage.
Well, well. The Kennedys were about to fall for sure. This was proof. Sally was only trying to delay the inevitable. As we reached the lobby, I spotted Soren emerging from a car. He’d come!
He waved at me as I approached him. “How did you know it was here?”
He glanced at Sally before answering, “It’s not hard to find out where someone lives when you’re me. I was worried you might be in trouble, so I waited nearby. If you don’t need me, I’ll leave once it’s over.”
I met his gaze, understanding exactly what he was doing. He didn’t expect me to catch on, but I did.

Sally’s generation had once been somewhat acquainted with the Kenways. Hearing a younger member speak disdainfully about her seemed to bring out her bitterness.
“What do you know? Unlike us, you Kenways are still at the top of the food chain! We’re desperate. We’ve reached the end of the rope!” she replied, her eyes red with emotion “And what’s pride and dignity worth if it means I can save my son?”
