Chapter 46
I could not imagine what kind of news this would become of the Internet. I couldn’t even tell if it would be a good or bad thing for me.
What I did know was that I won. I fucking won. I hadn’t lost my dignity in this bidding war, and I had just delivered a metaphorical slap in the face to Edward and Maddison.
I would have died for Soren just for the help he had given me. Seriously.
Maddison could barely afford to put on airs anymore,
“When did you become friends with Mr. Kenway, Taylor?” he demanded, envy dripping from her voice.
I held the box close to me and smiled smugly. “Why do you care?”
“You b
b-”
I turned away, ready to leave the auction before it ended.
**re for?! The
Maddison knew she had lost and turned to Edward in a fit. “We’re fucking leaving! What are we still thing I wanted is already gone!”
Edward just stared ahead, dazed, as though he hadn’t recovered from his shock.
I wasn’t interested in them. Instead, I raced toward the entrance as quickly as I could. Maybe he was still here.
I heard sounds coming from one of the lounges.
I thought it was Soren, so I pushed the door open–but he wasn’t inside.
What a strange man. He could just show up suddenly and then disappear.
Convinced he had left, I turned back toward the corridor.
As I passed by another door, I heard an argument.
“I know what’s going on in your head, Edward! You feel regret! You regret abandoning Taylor! You regret being with me!”
“Can you stop this already, Maddison? I’ve spent every moment I can with you when I’m not working! I’ve fulfilled everything you wanted! You wanted to attend this auction, and I had to cancel two meetings for it!” “You’re saying it like it was for me, but was it?! Or was it for Taylor?!” she shrieked.
“If this is what you think it is, what more can I say?” he said in exasperation.
“Your regret means jack shit now, Edward! Taylor’s gotten into a royal’s pants now! Do you know how far above your family the Kenways are?! She’s not interested in a second–rate plebian like you anymore!”
I pouted slightly.
Wow, that sure was a backhanded compliment. Honestly, I wouldn’t even dream of being anyone in the Kenways” world. I could work for ten years, and it still wouldn’t happen.
Maddison’s insult had enraged Edward.
“When can we ever stop mentioning Taylor between us, Maddie?! Did you marry me because you love me, or just to spite her? I’m starting to get dangerously confused!” he barked.

Chapter 46
“How dare you?! I’ve loved you for years, and now you’re doubting me?! Who took care of you when you were sick?! And now you’re thinking of abandoning me because have an incurable disease?!”
I almost wanted to storm in. She didn’t fucking care for him when he was sick–it was me! It was all me!
How shameless could she be to appropriate my years of sacrifice for her completely made–up story?! And how idiotic must Edward be to believe her?
“Abandoning you? I married you when you wanted me to. I went through public humiliation for it, but I braved it for you! So can you, for once, stop thinking only about yourself and throwing a fit every time you want to?!
“I am just a man. I need love, care, and people to ask me how I’m doing… But all you do is exhaust me!” “You… You’re the one exhausting me! You just can’t let go of her! That’s why you’re so impatient with me! You think I couldn’t tell, didn’t you? You… You…”
I listened to her bawling until, suddenly, Edward cried out, Maddie! Maddie!”
He crashed out of the room with her in his arms. The door banged into me before I could move.
Maddison was coughing up blood.
I met Edward’s eyes and finally snapped out of my shock.
“911?” I asked, flashing my phone.
