Chapter 56
“Fine, fine!” I raised my glass. “To love that eludes us.”

Love had eluded me too, hadn’t it? 1 had made so many sacrifices for Edward, only to be abandoned in the end.
It seemed I finally found the one thing I had In common with a man as privileged as Soren, after all.
He clinked his glass against mine, but before he drank, he stopped. “Do you still love your ex?”
I took a sip of my red wine. “Nah. But it does take time to completely remove him from my mind we were together for years.”
“I figured,” he replied.
“And a minor correction: he’s hardly my ex–husband in the eyes of the law. It’s a load of crap, but the long and short of it is that I have a feeling we won’t be legally separated for a while,” I complained.
Our second appointment was tomorrow, but I was worried he would be a no–show again. If he pulled that stunt, I’d have no choice but to sue him.
I didn’t want to do that, though, simply because the legal procedures would be too time–consuming. I was busy for these things lately!
Soren scanned my face and asked, “He can’t let go, can he?
too
I laughed bitterly. “Sure. The question is, what’s the thing he can’t let go of? Our relationship… or me as his life- saving blood supplier?”
Soren looked baffled.
“He suffered from a long–term illness before and needed multiple blood transfusions. He has a rare blood type- which, as it turns out, I share. So, I was the one who donated much of my blood to help him,” I explained.
“It’s absurd, isn’t it? Maybe I’m the main character in a soap opera. Where else can you find something so ridiculous in real life?”
Soren wore an unreadable expression. After a while, he finally replied, “You’re too good for him in every way. He doesn’t deserve you.”
I nodded. “Exactly! So, I’m glad I at least got out of that trag.
Soren could tell I hated talking about this, so he didn’t press for more.
The dinner lasted two hours. We kept chatting about all sorts of things. It felt like two friends having a reunion.
After that, I brought up the 40,000,000 dollars and told him I wanted to repay him.
At first, Soren insisted it wasn’t urgent. But I shoved the same legal documents I had prepared last time into his hands again.
If I couldn’t pay him back in five years, he could acquire my company.
I was so determined that he caved and signed the papers.
That night, after returning home, I gazed at his signature and name on the documents. His handwriting was firm, strong, and confident.

That was it. My brain could no longer stop itself from fantasizing.

In my defense, Soren was just so incredibly perfect and exceptional! Everything he did was mesmerizing. How was anyone supposed to keep it together?
I just felt blessed to have met someone who could help me walk out of the pain and gloom Edward had left me in.
Still, that didn’t mean I was losing the plot.
– My admiration for him was one–sided. Nothing more, nothing less.
He had someone he liked. His family had already made arrangements regarding his love life, too.
As for me? I was someone from the lower rungs of the social hierarchy.
I could never reach his prestige. Thus, fantasizing on my own was all I had.
My phone kept vibrating.
Jean was calling for me to spill the tea. She had this conspiracy theory that Soren and I were already secret lovers or something.
I told her the Kenways were simply incredibly good people through and through, but she wouldn’t believe it. Jean: [Don’t sell yourself short! Don’t you know you’re the queen of every socialite and elite lady in Metropolis? Who’s got beauty and talent like you, Tay–Tay?!]
Jean: [You should actually try before you give up, sis! He hasn’t gotten together with his dream girl yet! So get out there and make me forget about her!]
Jean: [Oh man, if you manage to bag Soren as your new boyfriend and then show up in front of those two jackasses -fucking sick!!!}
