I laughed bitterly. I was relieved I hadn’t agreed to anything but God, it hurt so much.
“No, Tay. You’re misunderstanding me. If you think 7,000,000 dollars isn’t enough, I’ll lend you 40,000,000 dollars so you can pay Soren off and never have to associate with him again,” he said quietly.
Tears streamed down my face, and I wiped them away with a tissue.
“Hell no! I’m not touching anything from you! Everything you touch is poison!
“And don’t you dare think I’ve forgotten why the bracelet ended up costing 40,000,000 dollars! You raised the price because you were trying to impress that bitch back at the auction!
“And now you’re pretending to be the good guy? Miss me with that bullshit!” I thundered.

“Listen to me. The Kenways aren’t as noble as people think. Their glory and prestige come from sources you can’t ( even begin to understand! Don’t fall for it–get out while you still can!” Edward warned.
I sneered. “Please. What does he gain from me?”
“Your youth and beauty, Tay! He wants you as his toy!” Edward replied, his voice grave, as though he were risking his life to protect me. “Trust me. You can’t beat him at his game!”
He could wear all the masks he wanted, but I knew who he really was. A liar. A disgusting narcissist. A two–faced snake saying all this because he was afraid I’d fall for someone else and never look at him again.
He was pathetic. I’d rather die in loneliness than live with him.
I retched. Disgust swelled within me. I pressed the distress button.
Edward panicked. “Maddie’s days are numbered, Tay! Please just lend her the bracelet for a while! Let her have it until she passes away! You’d even make 7,000,000 dollars doing nothing!”
“What if she suddenly went ballistic and smashed the bracelet?” I rebuked.
Edward thought I was starting to be convinced. “No, of course not! She loves it too much! How could she damage it? Besides, even if she accidentally broke it, I’d pay you back the original price!”
I leaned back in my chair and smiled. Then, I gave him my verdict. “Nope.”
He glared at me helplessly as the security guards knocked on my door.
“Show him the way out, gentlemen. If he doesn’t cooperate use force. I’ll take full responsibility,” I said before turning back to my work.
The guards pulled on his arm.

He resisted, shouting his best offer, “You want a divorce, Taylor? If you lend me the bracelet, I’ll show up!”
“No thanks, Mr. Kennedy. See you in court,” I replied.
The guards began dragging him out.
Embarrassed, Edward shoved one away and stormed out.
The office retumed to silence.
I dropped my pen to the floor as my mind replayed what had just happened.
