Soren rejected my proposal. “Nah, it’s fine. It’s hardly urgent. We can schedule another time when you’re free.”
“I don’t think I’ll be free anytime soon. If my sister passes away, I’ll have a lot to handle. I’d rather not delay your commission, so I’d like my assistant to speak with you,” I said as sincerely and politely as I could.
He wasn’t foolish. He immediately sensed something was off. “Taylor, why does it sound like you’re distancing yourself? Have I, or my family, done something wrong?”
He was as candid as ever, never one to mince words.
My tongue faltered. I couldn’t come up with an excuse anymore.
Soren added patiently, “Please let us know if we’ve offended you in any way. It’s alright.”
“N–No! Quite the opposite. You… You’ve been so unimaginably considerate and kind to me that it’s almost…”
‘Almost feels like a trap!‘ I finished in my mind.
I didn’t dare say it aloud for fear of offending them.
He chuckled. “Have we been so friendly that you suspect an ulterior motive?”
Damn it! He was too clever–or maybe he could read minds!
Still, I had to deny it.
“No! Of course not. You misunderstand me. It’s just… I’ve got a lot of personal matters to attend to lately. And the rumors too. These troublesome rumors are just…”

These were the truth, though.
Even if the Kenways had no ulterior motive, my interactions with Soren had gone beyond the typical relationship between a client and a tailor, or between a man and a woman who were merely acquainted.
I admired and looked up to him. But that was all. I needed to stop before I sank any deeper into these feelings and caused myself more pain. I had to restrain myself.
Soren was quiet for a moment before he finally muttered, see. You genuinely want to distance yourself from me.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Kenway.”
“It’s alright. You don’t need to send your assistant to me. Just focus on your personal matters.”
He ended the call before I could say anything more.
I set my phone down and watched the screen as his name faded to black.
I was left to wallow in the complicated emotions that had surfaced.
Had I hurt someone who genuinely cared for me, or had I protected myself from harm by trus
my instincts?
I felt terrible. It was as if I had lost something precious. The pain was reminiscent of when I realized Edward had betrayed me.
But I had been with Edward for over six years. My relationship with Soren had only existed in a few suggestive moments, and yet it already rivaled my feelings for Edward God.

The next morning, Charles contacted me, saying I could cancel the other women’s commissions if I wanted to.
I wanted to finish them, though. I had made a promise, and I always intended to keep it.
I told him I’d finish them as soon as possible, and as a token of apology for the delay, I wouldn’t charge any follow -up fees.
I felt despondent again after ending the call.
Soren must have spoken to Charles to initiate this conversation.
He had become so distant and aloof toward me.
