Chapter 77
Jean did not answer me. She walked out of the room, the phone still pressed to her ear, and returned with one of the most adorable young women I had ever seen.
The young woman was dressed in a sailor–style dress, her makeup impeccably cute. She looked like a doll.
I was surprised Jean even knew someone so young and fashionable–she could have easily passed for a high schooler!
As I studied her more carefully, I was stunned.
It was the young woman who had worked as an Uber driver In a Porsche!
“Meet Soleil Crowe!” Jean announced. “She’s the one who helped remove all the wedding news from the internet back then. Apparently, she’s friends with some higher–ups on those social media platforms. All she had to do was show her face, and it was gone!”
Jean grinned, clearly pleased with herself. “I planned to take her out for a meal to thank her and invite you along, but Soleil’s schedule as an artist clashed with my plans.
“She just
got
back in town yesterday! So, I figured, why not have her join us today?”
Alex and the others immediately warmed to her, introducing themselves with enthusiasm.
I smiled and stood. “What a coincidence to see you again!”
Jean’s eyes widened. “Wait. You two know each other?!”
Before I could respond, Soleil beamed. “There was a time when life was tough, and I worked as an Uber driver for a bit. She was one of my passengers! I remember her because she was way too pretty!”
Jean raised an eyebrow. “I don’t buy it, Miss Alleged Uber Driver. I think you just wanted to see what it was like to live like that!”
I couldn’t help but agree. She probably recognized me from the Internet, saw me at the hospital, and decided to roleplay as an Uber driver out of curiosity.
Jean raised her glass. “Girls, I think this is fate. We’re destined to be friends! Cheers to that!”
Soleil waved a hand. “Oh, I can’t drink. My brother would kill me if I did!”
“Your brother? Is he that strict?” Jean asked, intrigued.
“You have no idea!” Soleil held up a glass of fruit punch. “This is the only thing I can drink. If I mess up, he’ll cut my allowance again, and I’ll have to go back to being an Uber driver!”
It was hard to tell if she was joking, but her refusal to drink was clear. None of us pressed the issue, so we let her toast with fruit punch.
Soleil’s mannerisms gave her away–she carried herself like someone from an elite, wealthy family. The fact that she could effortlessly erase news from the Internet only reinforced the impression.
Naturally, she became fast friends with Alex and the rest of the group.
Jean glanced at the time and clapped her hands. “Alright, girls! Time for the main event. Taylor’s the star of the evening!”
“What? Why me?” I asked, caught off guard.
