Alex and Lacey–another one of my good friends–grabbed each of my hands, howling with laughter.
“Hey! We shouldn’t be traumatizing our new friend here with this!” I protested.
Soleil waved her hands, laughing as she filmed me too. “El I’m good, Tay–Tay!”
I was stunned. This young woman was more of a party animal than I’d thought!
“See this, Tay? You’ve just lost any right to ever complain about being alone! We all know you’ve been going through some tough times, so I spent a fortune to make ‘The Best Frickin‘ Birthday Party Ever for you! You’re gonna love it!” Jean declared.
Oh God. It felt like a proclamation, a teaser for something even more absurd.
I heard a knock at the door.
Jean’s smile widened. “Oho, here we go, ladies! Ready…”
She opened the door, still filming.
Confetti and ribbons rained down on us, swirling in the cool air.
I shrank back from the sudden pops while Alex and the others shrieked with glee.
A posse of handsome men entered the room!
The first handed me a bouquet. The second hung a floral galand around my neck.
The third took off my party hat and set what looked like a diamond crown on my head.
The fourth carried a guitar, strumming “Happy Birthday,” while the fifth performed a magic trick. He transformed a cane into a long, white veil, which he draped over my head. (1)
Finally, the sixth pushed in a trolley carrying a cake of the most exquisite design.
I was laughing nonstop, like someone at the craziest fiesta My friends weren’t any more composed–they shrieked so excitedly I was half–worried the glassware might shatter.
I finally understood the meaning of the “Queen of the Night” sash. These men were here to serve me tonight!
Ha, I had to hand it to my girls–this birthday party was perfect for me!
“Aren’t these hunks hawt?! They’re all better than a certain Shit–ward Kenne–dick! Choose any one of them to your heart’s content!” Jean declared gleefully.
The young men–each with his own brand of hotness–began introducing themselves.
I thought I had a good memory, but I quickly realized I couldn’t keep track of all their names!

The mood changed into high gear. Food, wine, music, dancing, and endless laughter filled the air–glitz, glamor, glee, and grandeur!
I felt a sheen of hedonistic cheer. The young men were genuinely entertaining. Above all, I thanked my best friend for giving me one of the best nights of my life.
1… kind of forgot how much I drank that night.
I was just about to cut my cake when Jean suddenly raised her hand. “W–Wait! S–Someone’s… not here yet, y’all!” she slurred, clearly tipsy.
My grip tightened around the knife. “Who’s that?”
A knock echoed at the door.
Jean signaled to one of the young men to open it.
