I had been spending way too much time staring at that Patel Philippe lately.
I thought Soren would call me. After all, this was an expensive luxury watch! But two days had passed, and he hadn’t called about it once.
I was starting to wonder if he had even realized it was missing. Did he have so many expensive watches that he couldn’t even tell one was gone?
When I checked the calendar, nearly time to go home, to plan my schedule for the next few days, I realized Lisbeth’s birthday was the day after tomorrow.
She had mentioned it when I took her measurements at the estate.
I knew I was too low in status to be invited to her birthday party, but Lisbeth had been so kind to me… and her son had been a great help. I should repay them somehow, right?
But should I give her the gift in person?
I pondered my options and decided that the best way would be through Soren. I could return his watch all in one
go, too.
The next day, after much consideration, I picked out a perfect gift for Lisbeth: a rose gold brooch shaped like a swan, and a sautoir necklace of pearls and zirconia. Elegant and classy, they were perfect accessories to the dresses I’d made for her.
If Lisbeth liked them, she could wear them right away with one of her dresses.
The gift was great, but I still couldn’t summon the courage to call Soren.
Three days had passed, and he still hadn’t asked about his watch!
Maybe… he didn’t want anything to do with me, did he?
But I couldn’t hold on to his watch any longer. I already owed him so much!
After giving myself a little pep talk, I finally dialed his number. My heart raced with each beep as the call connected.
I felt my heart stop for a second.
“Mr. Kenway, good day. It’s Taylor Jones.”
“I know,” he replied gently.
My mind was a mess. “So… about that Sunday night? I can explain. I was out with friends, and I had a bit too much to drink. Were you the one who drove me home?”
“Yes,”
“Your watch… You left it at my place. I’d like to arrange a meet–up to return it to you. I also picked out some gifts for Madame Kenway’s birthday as a thank you for her hospitality. Please deliver them to her on my behalf.”
I pressed my hand to my chest. Be still, my heart…
“Are you free around 4:00 p.m.?” he asked.

“Yes!” I answered before I even thought it through.
“I’ll be seeing an acquaintance in your area later. I should be done around four. We could have tea together if you’re free.”

“Sure, sounds good. See you then.”
“See you.”
I stared at the watch and Lisbeth’s gifts, my mind racing with emotions.
Could 4:00 pm come any sooner?!
No, wait! Please don’t come so soon!
Time didn’t care about what I thought. It simply moved at its own pace. Finally, it was almost 4:00 p.m.
Soren called again, asking about a good place to meet.
“The building opposite my company is a good spot. There’s a café on the balcony.”
