Chapter 49
Hugo hadn’t had a home–cooked meal in a while. They had chefs, but their stuff wasn’t the same as Evalina’s.
He kept telling himself it was just about getting used to new flavors. But seeing Evalina smiling at him, he felt a weird urge to give in.
Evalina didn’t waste any time, heading straight to the kitchen like she’d been doing it for years.
Hugo settled in the lounge area of the restaurant, able to see Evalina moving around inside.
She moved with ease, totally focused on her cooking, tasting now and then with a spoon. For a moment, it was like they were back in their simpler days.
But when she looked up and caught Hugo’s gaze, he was reminded of the sassy woman who always had a comeback.
Hugo scoffed, grabbing a book to stop looking at her. “You and your drama,” he muntered under his breath.
“Dinner’s ready, come on, Evalina said, quickly setting the table. Seeing Hugo still sitting there, she marched over and pulled him to the dining table.
Hugo rolled his eyes but picked up his fork.
Evalina watched him eagerly. “So, how’s the taste?
Hugo frowned. The food was as good as ever. After eating at different restaurants, her cooking really stood out. It wasn’t just about getting used to it, she was really good, better than some fancy chef’s
But all Hugo said was, “Tastes the same as always.
Evalina inwardly rolled her eyes. This ungrateful guy. I’ve spent so much time learning to cook for him. Everyone else loves my food, but to him, it’s always the same. Some people just don’t appreciate others‘ efforts.
But then, I’m not Olive. If Olive cooks, he’d probably be all over the compliments, no matter what
Hugo glanced up from his plate, a sly grin spreading across his face. “So, you’re here about that call, huh? Thinking I’d go easy on Walden’s company?”
Evalina shook her head, snapping out of her daze. “Look, Hugo, I screwed up today. I know it. But you said you’d lay off Walden. You were the one who broke your word first. I just… I just lost it for a second”
Hugo snorted, “Broke my word? Please. You had me backed into a corner, And I never said I wouldn’t keep my promise.”
Evalina opened her mouth to argue “But-”
Bu Hugo cut her off. “Nope, don’t even try it. You’re the one asking for a favor now And a home–cooked meal ain’t gonna cut it.
She gritted her teeth, determined to get him to agree since she was already here. I know that. I’ll do whatever it takes, as long as you can forgive me”
Lane
Hugo raised an eyebrow. “Really?”
Evalina nodded. “Yeah, but I’m serious about making this right. But um, not drinking”
Hugo smirked, “Drinking with me? You wish“
Hugo chuckled, standing up and heading for the door.
Evalina hesitated for a second, wondering where they were going, but she quickly caught up.
