Chapter 13
And her health wasn’t great. She’d been on medication for years.
The doctor said she couldn’t take emotional shocks.
Adrienne had even learned massage techniques just to help ease
her pain.
She suddenly felt her throat tighten, unsure of what to say.
Corinne immediately sensed something was wrong. She turned
to Garrett, who was reviewing contracts beside her, her face
stern. “Did you fight with Adri again? Can’t you fix that temper
of yours? You ungrateful brat! If I ever hear those rumors about
you cheating with that Bethany woman are true, I’ll break your
legs. Cough, cough…”
She was getting emotional.
Garrett frowned. “Calm down. There’s nothing going on
between me and Bethany.”
Corinne let out a sigh of relief and then gently asked, “Adri,
when are you coming home? It rained yesterday, and I was
afraid you’d catch a cold again. I brought you some nourishing
soup.”

Garrett flipped through the contract and sneered, “Do we look
soup at home?”
like we’re short on people who can mak
It was obvious that Corinne had heard the rumors and came
specifically to check on the situation between the two.
Adrienne lowered her lashes and replied obediently, “I was out
looking for a job today. I’ll be home soon.“”
Corinne relaxed and smiled. “Good, good. You’ve been cooped up
at home, and I was afraid you’d get sick from boredom. What
kind of work do you want to do? I’ll have Garrett arrange
something at the company for you. Light work with good pay.
Young people like that”
Adrienne couldn’t bear to hear any more. She had only said a
few polite words to avoid upsetting Corinne and then ended the
call.
When the dial tone came through, Corinne threw a cushion at
Garrett.
“Tell me the truth. What’s going on? Is the Melendez Group
going bankrupt? Why would you let her go out looking for
work?!”
“She wants to be independent. Why are you interfering?”
Chapter 13
Corinne felt like talking to him would give her a heart attack.
She patted her chest. “If only you had half your brother’s
grace…”
A cold glint flickered in Garrett’s eyes. Grace?
He surely had his hidden ambitions.
In the seven years since he had been found, he had survived no
fewer than a hundred assassination attempts. He didn’t have
the energy to care about trivial things.
Corinne eventually calmed down and sighed. “Forget it. Just get
along with Adri. That child is so sweet. I liked her from the first
moment I saw her. You were so eager to marry her back then.
Who knows what happened after that? I don’t get why things
had to turn out so ugly.””
Garrett said nothing, quietly reading the contract.
Not long after, Adrienne returned.
“Corinne.”
She changed her shoes at the entryway and greeted softly, but
after just a few steps, her vision went black and she nearly
collapsed.
Chapter 13
Corinne was so startled she almost fainted herself. She rushed
over to help, but Adrienne steadied herself against the cabinet
and barely managed to stay upright.
Her complexion was terrible. She quickly apologized, “I’m sorry,
Grandma. I just feel a little dizzy.”
“Damn it, Garrett! If Adri dies of a fever, I’ll never forgive you!”
Adrienne couldn’t even make out what they were arguing
about in the end. She truly passed out.
When Carlos arrived, he took her temperature and gave a quick
check–up. “She just has a low–grade fever from exhaustion. A
few days of rest and she’ll be fine. Don’t worry, Madam
Melendez.”
Corinne sat at the bedside. Furious, she nearly yanked Garrett’s
ear.
