Lia wanted to drink with her, but Bella stopped her. “You better not. If your heart condition flares up, I’ll be too drunk to save you.” Lia chuckled. “With a doctor by my side, what’s there to worry about? My heart’s not that fragile. Besides, you became a cardiologist because of me. I owe you a drink for that.” Bella had chosen to study medicine and become a cardiologist because of Lia’s congenital heart condition. Lia was her only friend, and Bella had tasted loss enough times to know she feared loneliness more than anything. By the time it was past midnight, Bella was so drunk her consciousness had started to blur. For someone who rarely drank, this night had been far too wild. “I’ll take you home…” Lia slurred while holding onto a shred of sobriety. Bella fumbled with her phone as she mumbled, “I don’t want you to… I’m calling Dominic…” Lia couldn’t help but laugh at that. “No offense, but you’re hopeless. Even drunk, you’re still thinking about him. Fine, call him. Let him pick you up.! Bella squinted at her phone, struggling to make out the words on the screen. After a few failed attempts, she finally managed to make a call. When the line connected, she mumbled, “Dominic, where are you? Come pick me up… I’m at Zero Bar… can’t go home…” On the other end of the line, Felix frowned as he got out of bed and started getting dressed. “Stay there. I’m coming to get you.” It was obvious she had dialed the wrong number, but Felix couldn’t leave her alone. After all, his confession to her back in college hadn’t been a joke. When he arrived at the bar, he scanned the area until he spotted two women slumped over in a corner booth, both completely out of it. He approached them and gently said, “Bella, I’m here. Let’s get you up. I’ll take you home.” Lia looked up blearily. “Why are you here, Felix? Didn’t she call Dominic?” Felix paused before responding, “She called the wrong number.” Lia was too out of it to argue, and she trusted Felix. She’d heard enough about him from Bella to know he was a stand–up guy. “Alright, take her home. I’ll manage on my own.” Before leaving, she gave a half–hearted warning. “You better not try anything!” Felix nodded, noting that Lia still had some presence of mind. “Be careful on your way home. Once you’re there, send a text to Bella’s phone to let us know you’re safe. I’ll keep an eye on her.” After helping both women outside, Felix made sure Lia got into a cab and gave the driver strict instructions before letting her go. Bella was practically leaning entirely on him. He hadn’t expected that after all these years, this would be the closest they’d ever get. But he was a gentleman who wouldn’t take advantage of the situation. “Bella, I’ll take you back to Miller Chapter 37 Dont Do Anything Reckless Manor.” Bella heard him but didn’t recognize his voice. She mumbled incoherently. “I don’t want to go back… Don’t take me back… He doesn’t like seeing me… He’ll be angry…” She was so drunk she’d completely forgotten Dominic wasn’t home. What she blurted out was something deeply ingrained in her, something that had become second nature. Felix frowned. The girl he had longed for had become so cautious and timid after being with Dominic. Whether it was selfishness or something else, Felix decided to take Bella back to his place. 

Chapter 16 The Child Isn’t His Lia was referring to Dominic when she mentioned Bella’s nemesis. Bella shook her head, feeling dejected, and confided everything she had discovered to Lia. Lia was like a startled squirrel, suddenly handed a juicy, unexpected piece of gossip. Her eyes widened in disbelief. Lia did her best to show her support to her best friend. “I think… the one who deserves all the blame here is your father. And even if Dominic’s dad had feelings for your mom, it has nothing to do with you. Don’t get too caught up in it.” Bella felt a deep frustration welling up inside her. She took a big gulp of beer, but it did nothing to wash away the suffocating feeling. After going through Dorothy’s belongings, Bella knew there was something else she needed to do. She had to find her father and deliver the letters Dorothy never had the chance to send. That man needed to know he was a heartless bastard who had ruined a woman’s life. Suddenly, a familiar woman’s voice cut through the air “Dr. Jones, what a surprise. I never would’ve thought that someone so serious in a white coat would end up in a place like this after hours.” Mandy had appeared out of nowhere. Bella looked up at the woman dressed in revealing and gaudy. clothes. She felt disgusted, probably because she was Dominic’s lover. Seeing that Bella had no intention of responding. Lia stepped in. “Dr. Jones, you seem to run into your patients everywhere, huh? And who says doctors can’t come to places like this? Everyone needs to unwind.” Mandy sat next to Bella. “Dr. Jones, are you and Dominic close?” The bluntness of the question made Lia roll her eyes. “What does that have to do with you? Why don’t you go back to wherever you came from?” Mandy smirked. “What I wanted to tell you the other day at the hospital was… I happened to see your picture on his phone.” Bella was taken aback. “What?” How could Dominic have a photo of her on his phone? Didn’t he hate her? Mandy kept up her mysterious air, her smile tinged with something unspoken. Bella couldn’t figure out what Mandy was getting at. If she had really seen Bella’s picture on Dominic’s phone, shouldn’t she consider Bella a rival? But there was no trace of bostility in her demeanor. She didn’t ask more about the photo, but she tried to probe gently, “You just had surgery not too long ago, and you’re out here. Isn’t Dominic worried about you?” Mandy burst into laughter. “Why would he care about me? You don’t actually think the baby I aborted was his do you?  Bella was stunned again. “It wasn’t?” Mandy shrugged. “Of course not. I wish it had been! If it were, maybe I’d have a shot at getting into the big leagues. But no, the father is just some notorious playboy who never takes responsibility. Just my luck.” Bella didn’t care about who the child’s father was. Her mind was racing with the thought that Mandy Charger 16 The Child fent His wasn’t involved with Dominic and that Dominic had a photo of her on his phone. 27 Could this mean Dominic didn’t despise her as much as she thought? Her mood suddenly lifted, but at the same time, her guilt toward him deepened. Chapter 15 Hidden Love Letter Among the items, Bella found a photograph of Dorothy with a handsome man whom she had never seen before. But instinct told her that this man was her father. Most of the letters were written by Dorothy to her father, but they were never sent. As she carefully sorted through the contents, she noticed a single sheet of paper at the bottom without an envelope. Curiosity got the best of her, and she unfolded it. The moment she saw Richard’s name, her heart sank. This was the only letter written by Richard to Dorothy The handwriting was strong and bold, and every word expressed a deep and enduring love. Bella was stunned. Did this mean that Dorothy and Richard weren’t as innocent as she had believed? At the very least, Richard had feelings for Dorothy. It was possible that when Dorothy was at her most desperate, trying to secure Bella’s future with the Miller family, she had spent her final days with Richard. For years, Bella had avoided seeking the truth, but it seemed like the answers had been hidden in this small box all along. The years of coldness and resentment from Dominic suddenly didn’t seem unwarranted. At the same time, she felt a strange sense of relief that Dominic hadn’t opened the box and uncovered these painful secrets himself. Guilt flooded her, along with a deep sense of unease. She had no idea how she could ever face him again. Suddenly, she heard the sound of a car outside. Was Dominic leaving? She walked to the window and watched as his car drove away. The guilt gnawing at her heart made her want to reach out to him, to make up for everything, but she didn’t know how. pulled out her phone and sent a message. “Where are you going this late?” To her surprise, Dominic replied, though his message was brief. “Business trip. She carefully typed out another message. “You just had a drink. Get someone to drive you. Be careful on the road.” Her concern was unusual, and Dominic didn’t bother to respond again. It was destined to be a sleepless night. As Bella looked around the vast manor, her feelings were a tangled mess. She shouldn’t have been there in the first place. It was her presence that had destroyed everything Dominic once had. If it weren’t for her, Dorothy might never have entered Miller Manor. Consumed by sorrow, Bella desperately needed someone to talk to. She called Lia. “Lia, where are you? Can you come out?” Lia’s initial reaction was one of playful irritation. “Well, look who it is! The elusive Bella finally remembers she has friends. You think I have nothing better to do than wait around for your rare calls? You pick the place.” They met up outside Zero Bar. Lia was dressed casually in a white hoodie, looking effortlessly chic. Her pretty face was partially hidden under her hood. Chapter 15 Hidden Love Letter 2/2 When she saw the bar sign, she was taken aback. “I was so sure you wouldn’t actually go into a bar. I thought you were just using it as a landmark. Are you seriously going in? Look at me–do I look like I’m dressed for this?” Bella tugged at her own simple outfit. “We’re dressed the same, aren’t we? I’m just in a bad mood and want to drink. You’re the only one I could think of to keep me company. Lia pretended to be annoyed but obediently offered her arm. Bella naturally linked her arm with Lia’s, and the two of them walked in together.  Bella wasn’t in the mood to have fun, so they headed straight for a booth in a quiet corner. After they ordered their drinks, Lia got straight to the point. “What happened? Did that nemesis of yours upset you again? I keep telling you to ditch him. Why put yourself through the misery of being treated like that?” 

Chapter 14 The Most Special Place Dominic glanced sideways at Bella. “Aren’t you going to open it to see if anything’s missing? I just happened to find it in the warehouse. I didn’t go out of my way to help you, so there’s no need to thank me. Bella shook her head. “Nothing’s missing, I’m sure… Actually, I don’t even know what’s inside, but this box was very important to my mom. Either way, thank you. As she spoke, she couldn’t hold back the tears. They fell onto the box, creating irregular, patterns on the surface. flower–like Dominic frowned and stood up to grab a glass. He poured some liquor and handed it to her. “Swallow those tears down. They’re annoying. Normally, Bella wouldn’t drink with Dominic, nor did she often get the chance. But her emotions were all over the place, and she felt like having a drink. Thus, she took the glass, wiped away her tears, and thanked him. The strong liquor burned as it went down, making her cough violently. “What kind of liquor is this?”  Dominic looked at her like she was an idiot and took a light sip from his own glass. “Can’t you recognize liquor, or can’t you read?” Only then did Bella notice the large letters on the bottle–XO. Feeling a bit embarrassed, she said, “I don’t drink often. Of course, I wouldn’t know. If there’s nothing else, I’ll go to bed.” Dominic sat back in his chair, lazily swirling the liquor in his glass. “You used to throw yourself at me. Are you trying to play hard to get now? Isn’t it a bit too late for that? Are you trying to make me think. you’re special? There’s no need. For me, you have always been special… Especially loathsome.” Bella laughed at herself. “Really? Well, I guess I should feel honored. At least I occupy the most special place in your life.” Suddenly, Dominic turned his head to look at her, as if searching for something. “Why didn’t I notice before that you’re so good with words?” The alcohol was starting to take effect, and Bella felt her face heating up. Since Dominic was in the mood to talk to her for a bit longer, she boldly sat down in the chair across from him. After tonight, she might not get another chance like this. She lowered her head and softly called his name. “Dominic…” His eyes briefly flashed with their usual irritation, but he didn’t respond. While refilling his glass, he poured another for her as well. His dislike for her was as deep–rooted as her love for him. But after so many years together, sitting with him like this didn’t feel as unbearable. Habit could be scary. Bella didn’t care whether he responded or not. She continued, “If I disappear one day, will you ever think of me, even just once?” Dominic frowned as he said in a cold voice, “Don’t try to play sentimental games with me. If you wanted to leave, you would’ve done it a long time ago. You wouldn’t have clung to me for so long.” Bella smiled without saying anything, then downed her drink in one go. This time, she didn’t cough. The burning sensation in her throat seemed to carry all the pain into her stomach, leaving only a searing Chop The Most Special Place warmth. He left much earlier than she did. Had he gone somewhere else? She didn’t dwell on it and turned on the lights. The warm glow slightly dispelled the loneliness, Just as she was about to head upstairs, she heard a car pull up outside–it was Dominic returning home. Felix had just left, so Dominic must have seen his car. She didn’t want to face him as she was still upset about what happened at dinner. She headed straight to her room, grabbed her pajamas, and went into the bathroom. As she watched the tub fill with water, the pink bath bubbles slowly expanded. It was an oddly satisfying process, something to distract her from the long, lonely evening Once the tub was ready, she sank into the water, letting her thoughts drift away. The warmth was lulling. her into drowsiness when, suddenly, the bathroom door swung open. Chapter 12 No Need Bella froze. Only three people knew about this–her, Felix, and her friend, Lia Lawson. How on earth did Tan know? Noticing Dominic’s gaze fixed on her, she didn’t dare meet his eyes. She asked, trying to appear nonchalant, “You’re pretty gossipy. Who told you that?” lan responded with a sly smile, “I’ve forgotten. It’s been a long time. I was teaching at your university back then and happened to overhear someone mention it. When you mentioned you were classmates back in university, I remembered what I’d heard.” Bella forced a light tone. “Oh, I see… It’s all in the past. He’s a good guy, but I’m not good enough for him.” As soon as the words left her mouth, she realized something was off. Dominic’s face had turned dark, his eyes full of intense anger as if he wanted to tear her apart. “Someone you can’t have might seem like your perfect dream, and just because you’ve slept with someone doesn’t mean you’re worthy of them.” Dominic’s cold remark sent a chill through Bella. Yes, whether it was him or Felix, she wasn’t good enough for either of them. She didn’t need him to remind her. After leaving the restaurant, lan was the first to drive away. Bella turned to Dominic. “I’ll hall a cab. Drive safely.” Dominic didn’t respond; he just got into his car and sped off, leaving her standing there as he disappeared into the night. But she didn’t feel lonely. It had been like this for years. Even if they were heading the same way, he would never offer her a ride. In his words, just seeing her made him sick. She had spent years trying to please him, but it had all been for nothing. Chapter 11 The Only One Couldn’t Be Seen Before lan could finish speaking, Dominic suddenly cut him off with a stern look. “Shut up. No one will think you’re mute if you don’t speak.” The room fell silent. lan glanced at Bella with a hint of concern, and Bella, sensing the awkwardness, stood up. “I’ll just head to the restroom.” She knew that staying would only make things more uncomfortable. But what she hadn’t expected was that lan actually knew about Mandy’s existence, and it seemed like they were quite familiar with each other. This meant that, among the women around Dominic, she was the only one who couldn’t be seen in public -the one who wasn’t worthy of being acknowledged. The question lan asked was one she wanted the answer to as well. Why had Dominic brought Mandy to Horizon Hospital, where she worked? Was it deliberate to make sure she found out? To make her back off? As this thought crossed her mind, she let out a bitter laugh. He didn’t need to go to such lengths. She had already decided to step back, and her resolve was firm. He didn’t need to waste any more effort. She stood by the sink and played with her phone aimlessly, deliberately taking her time. Suddenly, a lively little figure appeared in her line of sight. “Ms. Jones!” The child’s loud voice almost made her drop her phone. Realizing it was Yvonne, she reached out to pat her head. “Yvonne, what are you doing here? Who are you with?” Yvonne dodged her hand and pouted with displeasure. “Don’t touch my hair! Felix braided it for me. Don’t mess them up. I came with Felix. You want to see him, right? He said you two have known each other for a long time. Did you date?” Bella was taken aback, her mind full of questions. “You’re so young. How do you even know what dating is?” Yvonne struck a pose like a little adult. “Of course I know! Dating is when you hold hands, eat together, and kiss!” Bella’s mouth twitched. Kids these days were really mature. “Weren’t you here to use the restroom? Hurry up and go.” Only then did Yvonne head into a stall. Soon, she was back. She washed her hands while eyeing Bella suspiciously. “You didn’t come here just because you knew Felix would be here, did you?” Bella thought over her words. Could it be that Felix had been in a bad relationship before, leaving a shadow in Yvonne’s heart? Was that why she was so guarded? Bella sighed. “No. You don’t need to be so wary of me. If I wanted to be your sister–in–law, it would’ve already happened. I’m just here to eat. If there’s nothing else, I’m going back.” She was telling the truth. If she had agreed to date Felix back then, they might be married by now. After changing into surgical scrubs and completing the disinfection process, she approached the operating table. She glanced at lan Clarke, who was performing surgery on the patient, and didn’t seem surprised. The moment she saw Dominic, she knew that the doctor who had been transferred was lan. lan had known Dominic for many years, and he was even a professor at her university once. He was a respected figure in the field, and having someone of his caliber transferred to her hospital was a blessing for everyone. lan was also the only person in Dominic’s circle who knew about her. lan was meticulous during surgery. It wasn’t until the operation was over that he had a moment to greet her, “Long time no see. How are you and Dominic? Bella was startled for a moment. He asked about her and Dominic together, not as separate individuals, which had a deeper meaning “Uh. We’re both doing fine…” lan stretched his shoulders, stiff from holding the same position for so long during surgery, and smiled. I’m going out to eat with Dominic later. You should join us.” Bella hurriedly declined, “No, it’s fine. I have something to do. You two go ahead.” She felt a bit frustrated. It would be a miracle if Dominic was willing to have a meal with her. As his long- time friend, didn’t lan know about the strained relationship between her and Dominic? lan didn’t notice her reaction and continued, “These past three years have been tough on him. His father passed away suddenly, and with the branch office abroad just getting started, he wanted to come back but couldn’t.” Bella didn’t understand why lan was telling her this, so she remained silent. He suddenly added, “If I were him, I wouldn’t feel at ease leaving you at home alone either.” Bella narrowed her eyes as she looked at lan, who was smiling like a fool. Despite his excellent medical- skills and good looks, he seemed a bit clueless. He seemed to be wasting his talents by being so nalve. Did he really not know how much Dominic resented her, or had he just misunderstood their relationship all these years? As they were talking, Dominic walked over. lan, oblivious as ever, cheerfully suggested, “Let’s all go have -dinner together.” Bella was about to leave, but lan grabbed her, “Why are you running away? Are you afraid that Dominic’s going to eat you?” Her head was starting to throb. How did she end up dealing with someone so oblivious? Over the years, she had become ingrained in the habit of reading Dominic’s mood. She couldn’t help but glance at his expression and noticed that his face had grown cold. Chapter 9 The Thorn In His Heart Bella immediately went to the room and closed the door. It muffled Dominic’s voice as he roared, “Bella!” She didn’t want to pay him much attention. She bit back the sadness bubbling within her. There were some things she hadn’t been able to figure out. Had there been anything between Dorothy and Richard? Or were they nothing more than childhood friends? If they were just friends, how did Dorothy cause Richard’s divorce? Bella had been too young back then. She couldn’t understand many things. Was the truth what Dominic believed it was? Did Dorothy do everything she could to entrust Bella to the Millers on her deathbed? It made sense. Bella had never dared to dwell on it… Now, three of the people in that story have passed away. Even if they had left any clues behind, Bella didn’t have the chance to prove its legitimacy. This was a thorn in Dominic’s heart. He wouldn’t allow her to prod at it. In the afternoon, Bella went to Felix’s home. He had stayed home, just like yesterday. After greeting him, she began teaching Yvonne to play the piano patiently. Felix sat beside them and observed them silently. It made Bella feel a little awkward. She could only console herself that she was reading too much into his behavior. Felix was a capable man. Why would he fall for her? Back then, he’d been too young. He didn’t know better. During their break, Felix poured her a glass of orange juice. “I saw you drinking this back in school. You haven’t changed favorites, have you? It’s freshly squeezed It was the first time someone remembered her preferences from years ago. It moved Bella. She placed the orange juice aside and said, “Thank you.” Felix smiled and said, “During our university days, my dad didn’t give me any money to toughen me up. I survived on a scholarship and by working part–time. I thought you’d ask about that. Who knew you never grew curious?” Bella grinned and said, “Sometimes, stifling one’s curiosity is a form of respect for the other. I’ll ask Yvonne to come over. We’ll continue our lessons.” Then, her phone rang. It was a call from the hospital. She apologized to Felix and walked away. “Hello,” Bella said, answering the call. Peter White, the chief physician, sounded extremely panicked. “Bella, where are you? We don’t have enough hands on deck today. There’s a patient from the emergency department who needs an operation. Please come over now!” Bella felt rather troubled. She didn’t expect to be summoned to the hospital on her day off. However, lives were at stake in the hospital. After hanging up, she glanced at Felix hesitantly. Before she said anything, he said, “If you’ve got something to do, just go. The rest of her lessons can be shifted to when you’re free. It’s alright.” She sighed in relief. Thankfully, Felix was an easygoing guy. “Thank you so much. There’s an operation that needs to be done at the hospital. I’ve got to go.” Chapter 9 The Thorn in His Heart 2/2 Felix gave her a once over and said, “I didn’t expect you to become a doctor. I wasn’t as lucky. In the end, I took the path my dad laid out for me. Let me drive you there.” Bella shook her head quickly and replied, “It’s alright. I’ve already troubled you enough by leaving without finishing Yvonne’s lessons today. I’ll hail a cab there.” Felix pushed her out and insisted, “Why are you being so polite with me? We’re old friends and both medical students. How could I possibly not understand the importance of lives at stake? Let’s go.” The warm hand on her shoulder calmed Bella down. She went with Felix’s suggestion. It was probably his charisma. Whenever she was with him, Bella felt extremely relaxed. When they arrived at the hospital, Bella got out of the car hurriedly after thanking Felix. She only found out the emergency patient had been wheeled into the operating room. Someone had taken her place as the main surgeon. While Bella exhaled in relief, she was confused as well. Peter wouldn’t have called her if the department hadn’t been swimming in patients. Why would a replacement for her appear all of a sudden? A young nurse hurriedly knocked on her door. She begged, “Dr. Jones, please come to the operation room. Dr.Clarke has just been transferred here. He doesn’t know his way around the machines we use. You’ve got to help him. Dr. White asked me to keep tabs on when you arrive!” Bella agreed and followed her out. While rounding the corner, she ran into a familiar figure. “You…

Chapter 8 We’ve Got Different Surnames Dominic didn’t come home that night. However, Bella wasn’t worried. She had no interest in finding out where he’d gone. She had to figure out how to stop paying attention to him. When Bella woke up at dawn, she slowly made herself a simple breakfast and enjoyed the rare moment of calm. She would be heading to Felix’s house in the afternoon to give piano lessons, so she had her morning free. It was time to deep clean the house. Upon thinking about it, Bella realized she hadn’t enjoyed a day of rest for the past three years After breakfast, she began tidying up the house. The gigantic Miller Manor was a chore to clean. Bella only finished cleaning the basement and the first floor at midday. After taking a short break, she started. cleaning Dominic’s study. For the past three years, Dominic had locked the door to his study, so Bella had never cleaned it. Today, she noticed that he hadn’t locked it. Thus, she decided to help him tidy up. When she walked in, there was the overpowering smell of dust, which made her choke. Bella had no choice but to put on a mask. Thankfully, the windows had been tightly closed. There wasn’t an exceptionally thick layer of dust on the floor. Bella went to the balcony and opened the windows. Sun illuminated the room and chased the darkness away. It gave the room a lively glow. When she finished cleaning his study, 1:00 pm had rolled around. Bella curled into a chair out of exhaustion. She pulled a random book out of his bookshelf. When she opened it, an old piece of paper fluttered to the floor. It was Dominic’s study, and everything inside belonged to him. Nothing could be damaged. Bella bent down hurriedly to pick it up. When she saw the words there, she froze. The paper was an essay she had written in middle school, entitled “My Brother” She hadn’t noticed when this essay had been torn from her book. Bella definitely hadn’t expected it to b with Dominic The paper had yellowed slightly due to the passage of time. However, the words could still be seen. Bella’s penmanship had been excellent since a young age. She had looping handwriting which was still legible even now. For some reason, every mention of “brother” had been erased. Did Dominic hate her that much? He wouldn’t even let her call him her “brother” in an essay. Suddenly, she heard footsteps downstairs. Bella folded the paper and stuffed it into her pocket. Then, she slotted the book back into place. Bella ran right into Dominic as she left the study. Feeling a little nervous, she started to stammer, “Um..” Dominic frowned and asked coldly, “Who gave you permission to enter?” She played with the corner of her shirt as she replied, “I–I just wanted to help you clean up. Your study was too dusty. Aren’t you going to use it? I’m done cleaning it. If you don’t want me touching your belongings, you could hire a maid to help you tidy up.” Dominic pushed her away and surveyed the study. He relaxed slightly and said, “I’ll get someone to clean it. You have no right to do that. Just because you’re living here doesn’t mean you own the place, got it?” Chapter 8 We ve Got Different Surnames Bella smiled dismissively. She answered, “Got it. I’ve got something else that needs attending to. I’ll be leaving now.” She had barely taken a few steps away from him when Dominic said, “Why are you so in need of money? Have I been stingy with you for the past few years? Don’t embarrass me out there.” Bella paused, but she didn’t turn back to him. She said, “Thank you for taking care of me all these years. I’m a working adult now, so I no longer need your help. “I’ve got a job, and I’m making money by legal means. We’ve got different surnames. No one knows about our relationship. Even if I were to embarrass someone, it wouldn’t be you.” Enjoy Ad–Free Readingss
