Chapter 20 She’s Pregnant
Maggie, noticing the car ahead, nodded. “Boss, I’ll look into it right away. I’ll dig up her entire family history. Oh, and by the way, about the company…”
Maryanne paused, considering. Her pregnancy was becoming increasingly obvious. If Cristofer found out, he would stop at nothing to harm her and the child.
She knew, all too well, the depths of his cruelty.
Reconciliation was out of the question. She had to keep this child. It was hers, and hers alone.
“Send all the documents to Polaris Mansion. I’ll be working from there. Geovanni will handle all external affairs as the group’s executive president. You’re my special assistant. Have the announcement posted on the official website tomorrow.”
Maggie’s eyes lit up with excitement. Finally, a chance to prove herself.
These past three years had been peaceful, but utterly devoid of challenge.
Returning to the company felt like a rebirth, an opportunity to finally showcase her abilities. Even the mundane seemed brighter; she felt a surge of happiness so intense, it almost felt unreal.
“Boss, I can finally show what I can do!” Maggie practically bubbled over with enthusiasm.
Maryanne observed her effusive smile, noting how almost

overwhelming it seemed.
“Alright. Have Geovanni send all the company documents over to me.
She had been managing things from the shadows, but she was aware of a few shareholders who were causing trouble.
Being a young woman, she knew, often made it harder to command universal respect, no matter her accomplishments. Despite her impressive track record, some of the older shareholders still seemed to view her primarily as a woman.
Perhaps, she mused, cultivating a bit of mystery wasn’t such a bad strategy after all.
“Okay,” Maggie replied.
Back at Polaris Mansion, Maryanne dismissed Maggie.
She made a beeline for the backyard of the sprawling estate.
Polaris Mansion was a space encompassing a garden, a swimming pool, the main building, and two smaller structures situated about a kilometer away.
Her destination was the basement.
She entered the password and stepped inside. A woman immediately rose to her feet. She approached Maryanne respectfully. “Ms. Nelson.” Maryanne gave a slight nod and asked, “How is Rodrigo today?”
Laura had a delicate, oval face; when she smiled, one or two small pointed teeth showed, lending her an endearing air.
“Ms. Nelson, it’s been four months. He’s exactly the same. Ever since you brought him back, there haven’t been any changes.”

Maryanne stepped further into the room, her gaze settling on Rodrigo as he lay in bed.
He was unconscious, lying still amidst the white linens.
Soft light bathed his pale, handsome features.
He was still strikingly handsome, even with his eyes sealed shut, utterly unresponsive to the world around him.
Maryanne studied Rodrigo, a complex knot of emotions tightening within her.
During the fire, she had first saved Cristofer, then risked her life to go back for Rodrigo.
When she returned to look for Cristofer, he was gone, but Rodrigo was in critical condition.
She had no choice but to bring Rodrigo back to the country for treatment. Someone had targeted Rodrigo for murder, so she’d used her influence with the Nebula Group to spirit him away secretly.
Rodrigo had woken once during that time, his voice weak but clear. He’d told her someone wanted him dead and begged her not to let anyone know he was still alive–not even Cristofer.
It was then she realized the incident a few months prior had been a conspiracy aimed squarely at Rodrigo.
Cristofer had been caught in its deadly crossfire, another victim.
It was after she returned that Cristofer had met Latoya, and his feelings had shifted, irrevocably.
Cristofer didn’t know she had been there that night too.

“By the way, Laura. Could you perform an ultrasound for me? I’m pregnant and haven’t had any prenatal care yet.”
Going to an ordinary hospital was too risky; Cristofer would undoubtedly find out.
The memory of his cold, scornful gaze flashed before her eyes, and the pain in her heart intensified.
“An ultrasound?” Laura looked at her, clearly astonished.
Seeing Maryanne’s serious expression, which bore no sign of jest, Laura was floored.
Maryanne walked towards the ultrasound room. “Don’t be too shocked. I need to secure an heir, after all.”
Laura followed quickly, the pieces clicking into place.
She felt a thrill course through her. Soon, the Nebula Group would have an heir. “Ms. Nelson, when did you conceive? How far along are you?”
