Chapter 28 Capture the Evidence
She knit her brows in concern, her ears catching another piercing scream. Instinctively, she rose and moved to the edge of the hallway.
Ahead, in the corridor, a man violently shoved a girl to the floor.
Maryanne hesitated for a heartbeat before deciding. She pulled out her phone, determined to capture the evidence.
“Leona, don’t you forget you have asthma. Marrying me was the favor I granted you. If you dare overstep your bounds again, meddling in my life, don’t blame me for ending your pathetic existence!”
The man was undeniably handsome; he wore a tailored suit and had a lean yet towering frame, but his cruelty overshadowed his looks.
The girl on the floor gazed up at him, her eyes brimming with despair. “Trevin, does my presence embarrass you? Am I so unattractive that you’re ashamed of me?”
A cold sneer twisted his lips. “Leona, you’ve been trailing me since college, serving my parents like a household maid. What else could you possibly handle? Let me warn you–stay away from me and Sharron Delacruz. If I marry her, I’ll divorce you. You’re useless to my ambitions, but Sharron isn’t. The Delacruz family is Summerville’s rising elite–what are you compared to that?
“Do you have any idea how hard I work to secure deals? I grovel, I drink until I’m bleeding internally, just to land a single order. But Sharron? She can elevate my family. I’ve already won her over.
“Soon, she’ll be carrying my child. So stay out of my way. If you dare interfere again, don’t blame me for being ruthless. With your asthma,

taking your life would be effortless.
“Besides, your condition means you can’t bear children. The Duffy family needs an heir. You’re better off staying far from me.”
With that, he delivered a brutal kick to Leona.
“Agh!” Leona cried out, a maelstrom of pain, fury, and helplessness consuming her. She stared at the man she’d adored for five years, her heart shattering at his brutality.
Leona’s asthma flared, her chest tightening, breaths coming in ragged gasps. “Trevin, save me… please, save me…”
“Silence.” A woman, draped in opulent attire, stepped forward.
Looking down with condescending disdain, she sneered, “Leona, you only have yourself to blame for your humble origins–useless to my son. Let him go. If this asthma attack kills you, consider it merciful.”
Leona’s spirit, already fractured, shattered completely. Hearing her mother–in–law’s words, she choked on a sob, her vision blurring as life drained from her.
She knew, then, that she had been wrong. Two years of misery had finally broken her.
Her husband betrayed her, her mother–in–law despised her, and it was all her fault.
The woman’s expression remained cold. “Leona, your low birth is your undoing. Don’t blame my son if you die.”
With chilling indifference, she turned and walked away.
The scene struck a chord in Maryanne. Her own mother–in–law had uttered the same words to her before.

Chapter 28 Capture the Evidence
She was about to intervene when she noticed Latoya approaching.
Maryanne hesitated, her steps pausing.
Leona clutched Latoya’s dress, her voice a desperate plea. “Miss, please -save me, help me… call an ambulance…”
Latoya, oblivious to Leona’s plight, was frantic to find Cristofer, terrified he might turn to Maryanne instead.
“Let go! How dare you touch my dress? Do you have any idea how much this costs? Can your ragged clothes even compensate if you stain it?”
Latoya snarled, delivering a vicious kick. Leona shuddered, pain flaring before her eyes drifted shut.
Maryanne’s brow furrowed. Latoya was truly despicable.
And Cristofer–was he blind to such cruelty?
Once Latoya stormed off, Maryanne hurried forward, retrieving a pill from her bag and pressing it into Leona’s hand.
Gently, she helped Leona sit upright.
The medication took effect swiftly. Moments later, Leona’s eyes fluttered open, landing on Maryanne. Tears still traced paths down her cheeks.
Her voice, raw and hoarse, trembled with hope, “Did… did you save me?”
Maryanne studied her ashen, desperate face, a pang of sympathy
tightening her chest. “Yes. Asthma requires calm. This medicine eases the attack, but it’s not a complete cure. In six months, I can offer you something that might fully heal you.‘

In six months, Maryanne thought, she could give her hope, a chance to rebuild her life.
“Then you could be completely free of symptoms and even carry a child naturally,” Maryanne continued gently.
“Really?” Leona’s eyes widened, brimming with disbelief and burgeoning excitement. Could there truly be a full recovery?
“Provided you survive that long,” Maryanne said, her tone hardening as she helped Leona rise.
Leona flinched, offering a bitter, hollow smile. “You… you saw everything, didn’t you?”
